Alumni board Career Path Symposium

Our dedicated Alumni Advisory Board has worked extremely hard in developing a workshop for all students interested in improving their career readiness. From Vaishali:

The Department of Psychology Alumni Advisory Board presents a Career Path Symposium titled, ” Innovative & Prepared: Your Road Map toward Career Success” on Friday March 15 from 10 am to 2 pm in Farmer School of Business. The workshop will enable you to discover your own personal story and brand, provide practical guide to your job search, describe many career avenues open to you with a psychology degree, and discuss written and unwritten roles for work success.

Please help to Make It Miami 2019

The schedule for this year’s Make It Miami events is available and Ted Peters (CAS) is asking that those faculty interested please enter your names directly in this spreadsheet. These are usually held Fridays (two Mondays), 11:15 – 12:15, in Armstrong.

In addition, those interested in serving on other faculty panels through the Office of Admission  are asked to contact Ted Peters. These other panels are Junior Preview Days held on Saturdays (3/9, 4/6, 4/27) from 9:15 – 10:15.

Finally, if you are willing to allow prospective students to visit your classes to get a sense of how excellent we are as instructors, please enter your information in this spreadsheet (be sure it opens to the first tab, CAS).

CIQS female recruiting event

Please see below an event organized by Lynette Hudiburgh, STA/CTE, to recruit female high school students. She would be grateful to have participation from faculty, graduate students, and/or undergraduates in Psychology, in particular:

Please mark your calendars so that you can join us for CIQS (Careers Involving Quantitative Skills) Day 2019, tentatively set for Tuesday, January 8, from 9:00 – 2:00, to recruit talented young high school females to study quantitative and science subjects in college. An alternate date of Thursday, January 10, has been set in case of inclement weather. This will be our Fifth Annual CIQS Day.

The Department of Statistics, in partnership with the College of Education, Health, & Society, and StatHawks sponsors CIQS Day: an annual event exclusively for female high school students. For this event we will invite such students from high schools in Southwestern Ohio (including downtown Cincinnati) to come to campus, participate in activities with faculty and current students, listen to faculty and student presentations, and converse with women who are working in STEM fields and in fields where good quantitative skills are needed. It is our hope that by introducing the students to these fields early, and by exposing them to exciting aspects of our fields of study, they will become intrigued and motivated to study a STEM discipline or to continue to study quantitative methods regardless of future majors.

We would love to have you join us and contribute to the success of this day. Opportunities for faculty to contribute include:

  • Create and facilitate an activity or exploration (30-40 minutes) that would be interesting and accessible to high school students. Presentations from last year included: Teamwork in Engineering; Big Data Analytics and its Applications; and Introduction to Earthquakes, just to name a few.
  • Identify current undergraduate and graduate majors in your department who might be available to participate in this day.

Joanna Jackson Goldman Memorial Prize

From Pam Engel, on behalf of the National Fellowships committee, announcing the current cycle of Miami’s most significant award that would be suitable especially for honors theses:

The Joanna Jackson Goldman Memorial Prize will be awarded to current juniors/rising seniors to carry out a yearlong, independently-designed project in scholarship, journalism, or the arts. Recipients of the prize might use the stipend to compose music, write a work of fiction, conduct scientific or historical research, or gather material for a work on American civilization. The prize will support aspiring poets, writers, musicians, historians, social scientists, scientists, and artists who, as a result of their experience, will contribute more fully and richly to the community of scholarship and creative achievement that they will enter after their graduation from Miami. To be eligible for the award in this year’s competition cycle, you must be on track to graduate by May or August 2020.

The prize (up to $11,000) is awarded to current students of junior status (graduating May 2020) for a senior year project. The intention of the prize is to give students with exceptional promise the rare luxury of independently pursuing ideas and activities that will enrich their later work and careers. Funds can be used for travel, living expenses, supplies – essentially anything required to complete the project.

The Goldman Memorial Prize is open to any student, not just those in the Honors Program. We do ask that you send interested students to Old Manse to pick-up a paper copy application so we are able to monitor the number of students interested.

The application deadline is February 1, 2019.

Honors applications due 12/3

A reminder from Amy Summerville, to whom you should direct any questions:

Current juniors wanting to apply for PSY honors must submit their applications online by Dec 3. If you have talented first-semester juniors in your lab right now who you think would be good candidates for PSY honors, please talk to them about the program and encourage them to apply. The application is very short and can be filled out online at the following link:

The application will ask students to list their PSY and overall GPAs (and to upload their DAR to verify this for accuracy), the name of their thesis supervisor (and I will follow-up with you to ensure you have indeed agreed to supervise the student), and a very brief (1-2 sentence) description of their topic area. Students will also be asked if they want to take PSY 400, a workshop course in which students develop a complete proposal for their thesis, in Spring 2018 (which is STRONGLY encouraged, but optional). FYI–PSY 400 will be offered on Tues/Thurs from 11:40 AM-1:00 PM (in case students ask).

As in years past, students must have a 3.25 PSY and 3.25 overall GPA to be eligible. I encourage you to ask students about their grades before you encourage them to apply. We’ve had an increasingly high number of students with GPAs well below these targets apply in the last few years.

For students who meet requirements and indicate on the application that they want to take PSY 400, they will be force added to the course. Enrollment in PSY 400 is by force add only and open only to accepted PSY honors students who are juniors.

Please note this important information about the application deadline. If a student applies for PSY honors *after* PSY 400 has begun (i.e., on or after Jan 29, 2018), he or she may still be admitted to the program and be offered the opportunity to do a thesis, but he or she will have forfeited his/her opportunity to take PSY 400. I will have limited opportunity to process honors applications during winter break. Thus, if it is important to you or to the student that he/she takes PSY 400, please make sure he/she submits his/her application on time, by Dec 3.

 

Showcasing undergraduate research

In April 2019, the ORU will host Miami’s 25th Undergraduate Research Forum. To celebrate this milestone in Miami’s dedication to mentored undergraduate research, the ORU invites the university join us for a yearlong showcase of projects and outcomes.  If you are interested in showcasing your undergraduate research project, please contact Martha. Upcoming events include;

Wed Oct 10, 2018, King Library AIS (134), 7:15-8:00pm. Two Miami Undergraduate Research teams invite you to engage in dialogue about these current global topics:

International Studies Class Research Team Projects. Undergraduate researchers discuss investigated topics: sustainable development, global governance and environmental sustainability issues/arenas.

tPP (the terrorism Prosecution Project). For the last four semesters, a team of undergraduate students in conjunction with a faculty advisor, have completed a large-scale data project which seeks to provide a patterned analysis and taxonomy of felony criminal cases involving political violence in the United States from 1990 to present.

Tues Oct 23, King Library AIS (134), 12:00 – 3:30pm (drop-in)Hughes and Undergraduate Summer Scholar (2018) Showcase of Research Projects:

The ORU Invites Faculty and Students to Chat with Hughes and USS Summer Scholars who conducted an independent summer research project. Students interested in applying in to the USS 2019 program are invited to ask questions about the process of choosing a research topic, searching for a faculty mentor to collaborate with the student on the project design in preparation for application submission on 02/02/2019. ORU staff will be on hand to answer individual questions and to discuss USS Program Guidelines and application process. Light refreshments will be available.

Humanities Teaching Labs

Pepper Stetler, Associate Director of the Humanities Center, brought to my attention a new initiative of the center called Humanities Teaching Labs. The program would require you to partner with a faculty from the humanities on a specific theme, and provides $2,500 in professional development funds and $5,000 in project expenses. Applications are due November 30. From the call for proposals:

The Miami University Humanities Center invites applications for a new program that integrates faculty research and teaching in innovative ways. Humanities Teaching Labs aim to bring together faculty from the humanities and related disciplines in student-engaged research projects organized around a central theme. Embracing the true sense of laboratory experimentation familiar to the sciences, Humanities Teaching Labs will promote skill-building, hands-on experimentation and outcomes communicable to the Miami community and beyond
