Updates from alumni

I just wanted to pass on the word I’ve recently received from a couple of former students. Kala Allen (B.A., ’16) was just named a recipient for a Fulbright fellowship to conduct a research experience in Nigeria! Kala is currently working at Duke University’s Brain Imaging and Analysis Center studying dementia and macular degeneration, and has also been accepted to the Peace Corps. We are extremely proud of Kala who worked with April Smith, Jay Smart, and me.

I received word from Roger Knudson that Miraj Desai (B.A., ’05) has just published a book, Travel and Movement in Clinical Psychology: The World Outside the Clinic. Miraj is now an Associate Research Scientist in Psychiatry at Yale, and has also been selected for the Melba J.T. Vasquez Early Career Award for Distinguished Contributions in Research from the APA Minority Fellowship Program!

Congratulations to both of these recent alumni, making Miami Psychology proud!

New writing center for English language learners

From Liz Wardle, Howe Center for Writing Excellence:

The new English Language Learner Writing Center (ELL WC) has begun offering limited services this semester. It will become fully operational at several sites around campus in the fall.

I am writing to let you know that the ELL WC website is now operational, so you can share it with your students and colleagues: http://miamioh.edu/ellwc. The site includes information on how to make appointments, as well as resources such as grammar tutorials.

If you have questions or would like to schedule a department workshop or one-on-one consultation regarding working effectively with multilingual writers, please contact the ELL WC Coordinator, Dr. Larysa (Lora) Bobrova.

Opportunity to participate in department course sharing bank

From Christina Fitzpatrick, who has been leading efforts to collect materials to benefit new instructors and those with new preparations:

The department is seeking volunteers who would like to share a copy of their course files for general use in the department. By providing a course bank, the department is hoping to improve teaching materials and free up your schedule to pursue other teaching activities (e.g., teaching research). If you would like to share your course you can make a copy of your existing CANVAS course that removes student information in a matter of minutes. If you would like to learn more or to share your course materials, please contact Christina Fitzpatrick ([email protected]).

Room 227 upgrades

Women in Science posters in the redesigned 227 PSYC

For those that do not have courses or meetings in the new and improved 227 PSYC, go have a look! The floors are now carpeted and the tables have new feet installed to make room rearrangement much easier. Most importantly, we have included artwork created by Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya as part of her Beyond Curie series to highlight significant women in science and technology. Much better than blank walls or seascapes, in my opinion.

Volunteer needed for diversity recruitment event

The dean’s office is looking for a volunteer for the RedHawk Overnight Event to be held at the Art Museum–no, you do NOT need to spend the night. From Ted Peters:

This is a diversity recruitment event the evening of Sunday, April 8th. We have been told to expect up to 25 students who are interested in CAS; however, we won’t know what majors they are interested in until a week before the event.

I know this is a Sunday night, but Chris and I ask that you find a tentative volunteer from your department and then we can let you know if you have any potential majors signed up to attend. Many departments won’t need to be on in attendance, but we’d like to be covered just in case.

Please let me know if you are able to cover this in case we have interested students. Theoretically I can do this if nobody is available but I’m hoping that one of you living in Oxford might be willing.

Congratulations to our clinical internship applicants!

Some wonderful news from Aaron Luebbe, Director of Clinical Training:

It is with extreme pleasure that I inform you that 100% of students
who applied for the predoctoral clinical internship matched this year!

This result is the culmination of months (years) of hard work,
preparation, and dedication by these students, along with the support
of their mentors and peers. I’m grateful for the support that our
program provides one another. And the sites at which these students
matched are some of the top in the nation.

So please join me in congratulating the following students who have
matched at the following sites:

Natalie Cook: Phoenix VA Health Care System
Mills Smith-Millman: VA Maryland HCS/Univ Maryland School of Medicine
Belinda Teo: Hawthorn Center

Please join me in congratulating these students, and recognizing the efforts of our strong clinical program in bringing this about. We wish these students the best of success as they head for their internships later this year!

CADS multidisciplinary funding opportunity

Allison Farmer, Director of Miami’s Center for Analytics and Data Science, announces a significant funding opportunity:

For the second year in a row, the Center for Analytics and Data Science (CADS) is pleased to offer a call for CADS Research Fellowship grants. The purpose of this funding is to seed new multidisciplinary research in analytics and data science that is likely to result in scholarly publications and external funding. To encourage stronger multidisciplinary proposals, CADS will focus resources to fund one proposal of up to $25K. Proposals must feature researchers from multiple departments. Proposals with researchers from different academic divisions are strongly encouraged. The award period is one year, beginning June 1, 2018. Proposals are due to me by March 30, 2018 and will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary committee.

Those who might be interested can see me for more information and application instructions, or contact Allison directly.
