Faculty interested in study abroad

Vaishali recently asked faculty interested in offering or considering study abroad opportunities to contact her, in response to the Global Initiatives call for proposals, due December 1. More information on study abroad can be found here.

Our department has some great experiences and it would be great to find ways to support more faculty offering these opportunities. If you have an interest in exploring this further, please see Vaishali to discuss and assist with your proposal. Ultimately, we might be able to sustain something programmatic involving several faculty.

Networking opportunity for your top students

Miami sponsors an honor called 18 of the last 09, where they bring back exceptional, impactful alumni (specifically, eighteen of them within the last nine years). They are asking for student nominations to be considered for a selective dinner with these honorees, which this year includes an NFL head coach and several entrepreneurs.

If you have students who you think would benefit from this unique networking opportunity, please send me nominations including the name, major(s), year, and a sentence or two on why they should be invited.

OER workshop and stipend

From Anna Liss, our social sciences librarian:

Open Educational Resources (OER) help alleviate the burden of textbook costs for students and provide faculty with content that can be customized to their courses. Open textbooks are full, tangible textbooks, used by many faculty across the country, and licensed to be freely used, edited and distributed.

Miami University faculty are eligible for a $200 stipend toward their efforts in exploring open textbook options for one of their courses! Here’s how it works…

  1. Apply for a space in the upcoming “OER Explore” workshop on Monday, Oct. 23, 3:00 – 5:00pm in King Library—During this two-hour session you will learn more about open textbooks resources. Capacity is limited, and preference will be based on OTL textbook subject area availability. Those selected to participate in this initiative will be notified by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. Apply here.
  2. After participating in the workshop, write a review of one of the open textbooks found in the Open Textbook Library (OTL).

Please note that you must complete both steps in order to receive the $200 stipend. In an effort to promote wide-spread participation in this initiative, those faculty who participated in previous OER Explore Grant Workshops will not be eligible to participate in this cycle.

If you have questions about this workshop or open textbooks in general, please contact Carla Myers, Coordinator of Scholarly Communications, at 513-529-3935 or [email protected].

Important new guidelines for grant proposals

As most of you are aware, Anne Schauer is currently the only staff available to assist with proposal submissions in OARS. This places an extreme burden on her and she is asking for your help. If you are considering a grant proposal submission you should let Anne know asap, especially those upcoming (e.g. R03, R15, and R21 all due this month).

You should also be aware that she will require a minimum 10 days advance notice of intents to submit, and a minimum of 5 days lead time for receipt of all materials prior to a submission deadline. These are not to be taken lightly and I have asked Anne to notify me of any faculty who disregard these deadlines. Please respect Anne’s position and help her to help you.

Knox Distinguished Teaching Award nominations due

Nominations are being solicited for the E. Phillips Knox Distinguished Teaching Award, one of the highest teaching honors at Miami. It recognizes “creative, innovative, and engaging teaching methods at the undergraduate level.” We have many deserving colleagues doing some great things in the classroom that I hope you might consider. Nominations are due to CTE by October 15.

Apply for CFR grants, deadline Oct. 20

The major faculty research grant cycle is open, including summer research appointments, grad assistantships, and small grants. I would encourage everyone to consider these if you don’t already and are currently eligible (you may only receive one every four years). From the Faculty Senate Committee on Faculty Research, by way of OARS:

The Faculty Research Grants Program encourages proposals addressing new avenues of research and scholarship either for the investigator or for the institution, initiating new projects and pilot studies, or testing novel or transformative research/creative ideas. The deadline for applying for the CFR Program is 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 20, 2017. Awards generally are announced in December. All continuing tenure-eligible or tenured faculty are eligible.

In particular, there is an important update starting with this funding cycle:

In keeping with broader university-wide diversity and inclusion efforts, a portion of available funds will be reserved for research, scholarship, or creative activities in the areas of social justice, human rights, diversity, and inclusion. Proposals in these areas must address a scholarly question that will lead to testable objectives or measurable outcomes. Regular eligibility criteria and applications procedures, as outlined in the CFR Program Guidelines, apply.

Colloquium 10/20: Dustin Wygant

Julie Rubin and the Psychology Clinic are hosting the colloquium speaker on October 20, who will be involved with several additional events in conjunction with his visit; Julie writes:

We are excited to announce that Dr. Dustin Wygant, Director of Clinical Training at Eastern Kentucky University will be coming to spend the day with us on Friday, October 20, 2017. Dustin was in my undergraduate PSY 242 class here at Miami many years ago.

Dr. Wygant will be offering us an advanced workshop in the MMPI-2 RF, which he firmly believes is the future of the MMPI and talk to us about how it will eventually morph into the MMPI-3. He will give us a good introduction/overview of this Restructured Form of the MMPI-2, how to use it and understand the results and more specifically how it is used with individuals with personality disorders. This version of the MMPI-2 is currently in use in the VA system and we will be using it here in the Clinic.

This workshop will be open to our graduate students, clinical faculty, the Student Counseling Services staff and alums and will take place from 8:30 am until 12:30 pm location to be determined. CEUs will be available for the morning workshop and possibly colloquium. Please let us know if you are planning to attend.

Dr. Wygant will be available for lunch with graduate students and then at 1pm he will offer an opportunity to meet with undergraduates regarding his career as a forensic psychologist. Later in the day, at 3pm he will present at colloquium. He has titled his talk: The Psychopath Returns: From Cleckley to DSM-5.

Dr. Dustin Wygant is an Associate Professor of Psychology and is the Director of Clinical Training for the doctoral program in clinical psychology at Eastern Kentucky University. His research interests include the assessment and conceptualization of psychopathy, particularly in terms of the DSM-5 Section III trait model of personality disorders. He is also interested in the assessment of malingering of psychological symptoms in forensic psychological evaluations and the utility of psychological testing (primarily with the MMPI-2-RF) in forensic, correctional, and medical settings. Aside from his academic position, Dr. Wygant is a licensed clinical psychologist and regularly consults with attorneys and judges on forensic assessments for the court for issues such as competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, and risk for violence.

Save the date: CAS recognition football game

From the Dean’s office, a night to support Miami athletics in appreciation of our achievements:

The first one was such a hit that our friends in Intercollegiate Athletics have invited us back for more! We’re now planning the second annual “CAS Football Game,” to be held on Senior Night (the last home game of the year), Wednesday, November 15 against Eastern Michigan; kickoff will be at either 7:00 or 8:00pm.

Note that this is separate from the Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day for the game against Buffalo on October 15, for which you can purchase tickets at special prices, starting at just $10, by using promo code FACSTAFF17.

Career development/internship workshop for students

From the Dean’s office, sponsoring an in-person career workshop specifically for liberal arts majors:

This October CAS is partnering with Vocatio to help students identify and hopefully land great internship or job opportunities. Vocatio’s Career Hacks program will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. for three weeks in October, culminating in a showcase to employers. Students will have an opportunity to find jobs that best fit them, increase their career-readiness, work one-on-one with potential employers, and land an internship or a job. This video can give you more of a feel for the program. Students who participated last year found it very helpful and many got internship/job offers, so please make your students award of this opportunity. The program is limited to 200 students. If they are interested they should sign up today or sooner than later.
