Call for Dean’s Scholar and Capretta Scholarship nominations

Allen McConnell and the Awards Committee announce two important recognitions for your talented undergraduate and graduate students:

The deadline for Dean’s Scholars applications has been set, with completed nominations being due before the end of the day on Friday, March 16, 2018. The College of Arts and Science Dean’s Scholarship is designed to encourage scholarly activity among Miami’s best undergraduate seniors, with students applying for support during the spring semester of their junior year. Details can be found on the Team Drive here.

The deadline for Capretta Scholarship consideration is Friday, April 6, 2018. The Capretta Scholarship is awarded to graduate students for research accomplishments completed at Miami University. Graduate students who have completed their master’s thesis and have not previously received the Capretta Scholarship are eligible for consideration. Reminder: University teaching awards

The dean has asked me to remind you all of the call for nominations for the Distinguished Educator and Graduate Student Teaching Awards:

The Distinguished Educator Award will honor two faculty members for excellence in teaching and related professional activities and the Graduate Student Teaching Award will recognize superior teaching by graduate assistants and teaching fellows.

There must be at least three nominations in order to present this award to anyone.

For additional information, you may contact me or Nancy Burnside (9-1234). These nominations must be sent electronically to Nancy by March 1.

Quick thoughts on assessment

Some of you as instructors recently received emails requesting assistance in your courses this coming semester. Beth Dietz, in her role as assessment coordinator, created two excellent resources to quickly summarize the assessment efforts in the department.

A three-minute video explains things well and succinctly, and this document on the department Team Drive summarizes our department implementation. Thanks to Beth for creating these. I hope each of you might take a minute to understand this process and the value in supporting it as I do.

Finally, those on the CTE list occasionally receive Assessment Briefs that cover a wide range of topics, including the most recent entry describing the assessment of the Global Miami Plan.

Teaching/mentoring award for grad students

Miami may nominate up two graduate students for an award from the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS):

Two awards have been created to recognize the importance of excellence in teaching and mentoring as a component of graduate education and the preparation of graduate students for future service as college and university faculty. One award will be given to a doctoral student and one to a master’s student. Each award includes a citation and a $750 honorarium that will be presented at the MAGS 74rd Annual Meeting, April 4-6, 2018, at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, Grand Rapids, MI.

Nominating a masters and/or a doctoral candidate from your institution for one of these prestigious awards is an excellent way to recognize and encourage future faculty and support the Council of Graduate Schools’ (CGS) efforts to promote Preparing Future Faculty to meet needs in academia. Please consider submitting a nomination in each category as appropriate to recognize excellence in your graduate teaching assistants.

Please see me for more information if you are interested in nominating a student from our department to represent Miami. Submissions need to be received in the graduate school by January 19.

Three-minute thesis (3MT) competition

The Graduate School has announced this year’s 3MT competition, for which the top presenters get some significant prize money, and the winner goes on to a regional competition! From Lou Haines:

I am happy to announce that the Graduate School’s 5th annual 3MT will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. We have a 3MT workshop scheduled for Friday, February 9th and preliminary rounds on four dates in February. Students may register at this Qualtrics link, and when they do, I will add them to the 3MT Canvas site where they will find a wealth of information on preparing for the competition.

This is a fantastic way for students to hone their presentation skills as well as learn how to explain their research to a diverse group.

Faculty award for graduate mentoring and instruction

Nominations are now open for this award to acknowledge excellent and sustained contributions to graduate education, for which several of our faculty are eligible and undoubtedly deserving. From Rose Marie Ward:

Full-time faculty members from academic units with graduate and/or professional instructional responsibilities are eligible for the Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate Instruction and Mentoring. The award includes a $1,000 professional expense account for use by the recipient. Up to two recipients will be selected to receive this award annually.

Eligible faculty must have seven years at Miami, but anyone is able to submit nominations directly to me. If you are considering someone for this award, please let me know and/or ask any questions as soon as possible since the application requires some preparation and it is due March 1.

fNIRS training in spring

Those that are interested in learning more about fNIRS (functional neuroimaging) have the chance to benefit from a course Vrinda is offering in the spring semester, which is open to all. There will be both an undergraduate and graduate component, so any of your graduate students or RAs could attend. The course will cover basics of cortical organization, hemodynamic response, and fNIRS (experimental design, data collection, and basics of data analysis). The meeting times are:

Undergraduate (PSY 375): WF 11:40 – 1:00; M 2:55 – 3:45 (Lab)

Graduate (PSY 620): M 1:15 – 2:55; M 2:55 – 3:45 (Lab)

Please direct any questions directly to Vrinda.

Society for the Teaching of Psychology awards

We have many excellent and innovative instructors, both faculty and grad students, in the department who should consider applying for the STP teaching awards:

The Society for the Teaching of Psychology (APA Division 2) announces its 2018 program of awards for outstanding teachers of psychology. Teaching awards of $1500 and a plaque will be bestowed for outstanding performance in each of six categories: 4-year college or university (Robert S. Daniel Teaching Excellence Award), … first 10 years of full-time teaching at any level (Jane S. Halonen Teaching Excellence Award), graduate student (Wilbert J. McKeachie Teaching Excellence Award), and the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. STP encourages applications from colleagues who are from underrepresented groups and have diverse backgrounds and experiences. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2018.
