Faculty award for graduate mentoring and instruction

Nominations are now open for this award to acknowledge excellent and sustained contributions to graduate education, for which several of our faculty are eligible and undoubtedly deserving. From Rose Marie Ward:

Full-time faculty members from academic units with graduate and/or professional instructional responsibilities are eligible for the Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate Instruction and Mentoring. The award includes a $1,000 professional expense account for use by the recipient. Up to two recipients will be selected to receive this award annually.

Eligible faculty must have seven years at Miami, but anyone is able to submit nominations directly to me. If you are considering someone for this award, please let me know and/or ask any questions as soon as possible since the application requires some preparation and it is due March 1.

Self-nominations for 2018-19 CAS committees

The call for nominations to CAS committees has been released, and I would encourage you all to consider these, as relevant. It can be valuable for our department to be well represented, and college-level committees are an important service contribution to be recognized in annual reviews and promotion consideration. From Renee Baernstein, via Nancy Burnside:

I write to invite you to volunteer for service on for the various standing committees of the College of Arts and Science. The committees listed below have expected vacancies for 2018-19. Before the Committee on Committees makes recommendations to fill the vacancies, you are invited to indicate your interest. You must have continuing faculty status to be eligible. Please email Nancy Burnside by Monday, November 27 if you are interested in serving on any of the committees listed below, and specify which committee(s) you are interested in.

Are you doing work related to diversity/inclusion?

From the Diversity and Inclusion committee:

The Diversity and Inclusion committee is hoping to better highlight all the fantastic diversity and inclusion related work in which our faculty and graduate students are involved. In order to do this, we would like faculty and graduate students to provide a 400-600 word summary of any research/outreach/service they are engaged in related to diversity or inclusion. These summaries could describe an individual project, a set of studies, or a program of research/outreach/service. We welcome individual submissions and also lab-based submissions (i.e., Dr. X submits an entry summarizing all the relevant work in his/her lab across multiple investigators). Also, a given person can submit more than one entry (to describe separate projects) if desired. Feel free to tailor your submission(s) in whatever way you wish.

We envision displaying these summaries on a rotating basis on the Psychology webpage, Facebook, and Twitter. We hope that highlighting the work we do related to diversity and inclusion will encourage more diverse faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students to work in our department.

Please send your summary to April Smith ([email protected]) by December 15, 2017.

Society for the Teaching of Psychology awards

We have many excellent and innovative instructors, both faculty and grad students, in the department who should consider applying for the STP teaching awards:

The Society for the Teaching of Psychology (APA Division 2) announces its 2018 program of awards for outstanding teachers of psychology. Teaching awards of $1500 and a plaque will be bestowed for outstanding performance in each of six categories: 4-year college or university (Robert S. Daniel Teaching Excellence Award), … first 10 years of full-time teaching at any level (Jane S. Halonen Teaching Excellence Award), graduate student (Wilbert J. McKeachie Teaching Excellence Award), and the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. STP encourages applications from colleagues who are from underrepresented groups and have diverse backgrounds and experiences. The deadline for submissions is January 15, 2018. For more information on specific criteria, what materials to submit, and guidelines for electronic submission visit the web site or contact: Krisztina Jakobsen, Chair of the STP Teaching Excellence Committee ([email protected]).

Students considering departmental honors

From Heather Claypool, departmental honors coordinator:

Current juniors wanting to apply for PSY honors must submit their applications online by Dec 4, 2017. If you have talented first-semester juniors in your lab right now who you think would be good candidates for PSY honors, please talk to them about the program and encourage them to apply. The application is very short and can be filled out online at this link.

The application will ask students to list their PSY and overall GPAs (which will be verified for accuracy), the name of their thesis supervisor (and I will follow-up with you to ensure you have indeed agreed to supervise the student), and a very brief (1-2 sentence) description of their topic area. Students will also be asked if they want to take PSY 400 in Spring 2018 (which is STRONGLY encouraged, but optional). FYI–PSY 400 will be offered on Tues, Thurs from 11:40 AM-1:00 PM (in case students ask).

As in years past, students must have a 3.25 PSY and 3.25 overall GPA to be eligible. I encourage you to ask students about their grades before you encourage them to apply. We’ve had an increasingly high number of students with GPAs well below these targets apply in the last few years.

For students who meet requirements and indicate on the application that they want to take PSY 400, they will be force added to the course. Enrollment in PSY 400 is by force add only and open only to accepted PSY honors students who are juniors.

Please note this important information about the application deadline. If a student applies for PSY honors *after* PSY 400 has begun (i.e., on or after Jan 29, 2018), he or she may still be admitted to the program and be offered the opportunity to do a thesis, but he or she will have forfeited his/her opportunity to take PSY 400. Also, due to holiday travel, I will have very limited opportunity to process honors applications during winter break. Thus, if it is important to you or to the student that he/she takes PSY 400, please make sure he/she submits his/her application on time, by Dec 4, but absolutely no later than Dec 22.

If you have any questions, please stop by or email Heather.

Leave requests due Oct. 27

Any and all faculty who are considering one-semester (Assigned Research Appointment) or full-year (Faculty Improvement Leave) leaves for the 2018-19 academic year need to submit materials to me by the end of business October 27. From the dean’s office, on process:

Like last year, I would like to ask that the leave requester add a 50 – 60 word abstract to the beginning of their 1-3 page summary of their request. They also need to attach their vita and a leave report if they have been granted one in the last 10 years. Please make sure that any of your faculty applying for leave are aware of the new abstract requirement.

The leave request form can be found on the Academic Personnel website in the forms library (Leaves & Time Off).

Faculty who are considering a leave request should consult with me prior to developing your request. Note that I need to ensure that a leave can be accommodated, and rank these when sending them to the dean. A brief discussion with each of those submitting will not only allow me to do so, but also to help you determine the best way to use this opportunity to maximize your professional development.

Undergraduate Research Awards due Oct. 16

There are two rounds for the URA program, the first of which is upcoming next Monday, October 16 and intended for student research projects to be conducted during winter term or spring semester. Students are responsible for submitting the awards, but require faculty endorsement. Successful proposals involve the faculty member’s input throughout the process. Awards are typically around $300 – $500 but may range up to $1,000 for those involving multiple students and/or exceptional merit. A faculty member may sponsor up to 4 submissions per cycle.

Please read the guidelines here and contact Martha Weber in the ORU if you have any questions.

Knox Distinguished Teaching Award nominations due

Nominations are being solicited for the E. Phillips Knox Distinguished Teaching Award, one of the highest teaching honors at Miami. It recognizes “creative, innovative, and engaging teaching methods at the undergraduate level.” We have many deserving colleagues doing some great things in the classroom that I hope you might consider. Nominations are due to CTE by October 15.

CUR undergrad travel awards

The Psychology Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research (ORU) has travel awards up to $200 for regional or national conferences for your students. Faculty must be the ones to submit for the awards, and the students submit a report after the meeting. The deadline is October 15 (for conferences thru February). Note there will be another call with a February 15 deadline for spring meetings.
