IUPUC is hosting the Conference on Undergraduate Research in Psychology in Columbus, IN, November 15, 2017. The submission deadline is October 15, 2017, and registration deadline Nov. 1. This might be a nice opportunity if anyone has students from the area, needs an excuse to visit Bloomington, or even for graduate recruiting.
By the way, our own OUPRC will be upcoming in Columbus, OH (Ohio Dominican; April 28).
The major faculty research grant cycle is open, including summer research appointments, grad assistantships, and small grants. I would encourage everyone to consider these if you don’t already and are currently eligible (you may only receive one every four years). From the Faculty Senate Committee on Faculty Research, by way of OARS:
The Faculty Research Grants Program encourages proposals addressing new avenues of research and scholarship either for the investigator or for the institution, initiating new projects and pilot studies, or testing novel or transformative research/creative ideas. The deadline for applying for the CFR Program is 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 20, 2017. Awards generally are announced in December. All continuing tenure-eligible or tenured faculty are eligible.
In particular, there is an important update starting with this funding cycle:
In keeping with broader university-wide diversity and inclusion efforts, a portion of available funds will be reserved for research, scholarship, or creative activities in the areas of social justice, human rights, diversity, and inclusion. Proposals in these areas must address a scholarly question that will lead to testable objectives or measurable outcomes. Regular eligibility criteria and applications procedures, as outlined in the CFR Program Guidelines, apply.
All faculty should have received an email (from General Counsel) about the annual Ethics Questionnaire and External Services. The dean has made very clear that faculty will need to complete the ethics survey, as we need 100% compliance as an institution.
Also, in this email was a link to report external services for things you do for outside entities (even journal service, publisher contracts, etc.). You need to complete this form as well, unfortunately for each such activity that you do (due to lawyers making surveys). Note that many of us have something here–things like serving on an editorial board are included. See the clarification on the matter in MUPIM here. It’s essentially trying to protect the “university’s time” by making sure we aren’t overcommitted to outside activities, but may be quite pro forma.

We are fortunate to have two distinguished alumni visiting campus this semester, Richard Mayer (Sept. 19) and Dustin Wygant (Oct. 20). If you know of other alumni that you would like to invite back to campus this academic year, consider proposing them for the CAS Alumni Lecture series. If you have individuals in mind, see me for submission information; the deadline is Sept. 22.

The Miami University Service-Learning Designation Committee (SLDC) is now accepting Service-Learning class proposals for the Spring and Summer 2018 terms. Miami defines Service-Learning (SL) as “an experiential pedagogical practice that uses action and reflection to meet needs and enhance learning through mutually beneficial, reciprocal partnerships”. Note that a syllabus is NOT required at the time of submission. Due Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Finally, Faculty from all Miami campuses are invited to submit a proposal for the first-ever Miami SOUP, a mini-granting dinner which celebrates and supports innovative and transformative community change projects in Southwest Ohio. Teams of campus and community partners are eligible to apply. Proposals are due Sunday, September 24.
Four proposals will be chosen as finalists to present their ideas LIVE before a voting audience hungry for soup and change on Saturday, October 21. First prize will receive a minimum of $2,000 + donations; second prize will receive a minimum of $1,000 + donations. Mini-grants are one-time (not yearly recurring) awards.
Faculty interested in this grant mechanism should let OARS know of your interest, since the number of institutional proposals is limited. From OARS:
The National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) assists in the acquisition or development of major research instrumentation.
NSF is currently revising guidelines for this program, which may affect the number of proposals Miami University can submit. Historically, however, we have been allowed to submit up to 3 MRI proposals (at least 1 of which must be for instrument development and no more than 2 for instrument acquisition) on which we are either the lead or a partner institution. To facilitate the selection of our submissions to NSF, we have set a deadline of Monday, October 2, 2017 to receive preliminary MRI proposals for internal review. You are required to provide a preliminary proposal regardless of whether you were selected as an institutional submission in previous years.
To be considered as an institutional submission, please email a preliminary proposal to
Anne Schauer, including a cover page giving title, PIs and departments, amount, and list of instrumentation. The Project Description should address both the scientific merit and broader impacts (3 pgs.). You should describe the proposed major research instrumentation, the type of research or research training to be conducted, the activities and projects that would result from this instrumentation, and how students will be involved and how their education will be enhanced through this instrumentation.

The 2017 Midwest/Great Lakes Undergraduate Regional Symposium (mGluRs) will be held at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH on Saturday, September 30, 2017! This is a regional academic conference, exclusively for undergraduates, where students can present their neuroscience-related research, learn about work being done at other colleges and universities, and engage in professional development seminars. There will also be workshops for faculty who teach undergraduate neuroscience courses.
