National Poetry Month 2020
Siri Imani is an artivist who has galvanized the city of Cincinnati with her potent lyricism and star quality performances. Imani and her collective Triiibe, that includes the talented vocalist and musician Aziza Love, and the incredible beat maker and lyricist poet Pxvce (Peace), have performed nationwide and are quickly becoming artists who are force to be reckoned with.
I am interested in their work because besides being friends of theirs. I have watched their growth from just starting out too performing at SouthWest by SouthWest to winning Hip Hop & Artist of the Year for Cincinnati Entertainment Awards.
Hey Siri Imani, thanks for giving me a few minutes of your time. I got 5 questions for you about your artistry. First, what got you started with creative writing/poetry? Describe your poetry style for somebody who haven’t heard you?
My mom got me started writing early. Before I even understood the importance of why I was writing. My style is slick a combination between all of the amazing poets I grew up around. The writing is poetic, but also very realistic. I’d like to think my delivery is pretty raw as well lol.
Who are some of the people that helped cultivate your gift? Family, triiibe?
MANY MANY ppl have helped cultivate my gift. My family for sure. Triiibe always. And the community. They look for, and hold me accountable for the content I create. I see the demand and I try my best to deliver. And overall everyone who’s ever encouraged or given me the space to express myself this way. These people have helped me in ways they’ll probably never understand.
Do you consider your art political/activism? If so, what inspired that?
I consider my art to be a complete reflection of who I am and what’s around me at the moment. Because I’ve submerged myself in my community and anything I personally feel is helping or hurting it, my music tends to reflect that as well. Which can probably seem pretty political. Activism is huge to me. And because I’m an artist I really feel they go hand and hand pretty well.
What is your ultimate goal for your craft? What legacy do you want to be left when it’s all said and done?
I’d love for “Triiibe” to be the legacy I leave behind. Anybody that considers themselves apart of, associates with, or simply supports tribe, will walk through their lives showing love, compassion, and respect for all people. That’s always been our message.
If you can have anybody narrate your documentary who would it be? Dead or alive…. or if you were casted in a movie to play anybody who would it be?
I’d have MC lite narrate my documentary lol, the ultimate honor.
Bet I appreciate you! And keep putting in that work! Y’all really out here making moves.
Thank you!! We gotta do a show with Underdog Academy again soon.
