This year marks our 50th year celebrating Earth Day! For what was originally intended to be a worldwide day of outside appreciation, we are taking the 2020 celebration to our own homes and neighborhoods. Earthday.org is calling these social distancing-appropriate activities devoted to environmental protection isolutions. Ha! Get it?
Here are our ideas for isolutions this year:
- Go on a solo nature walk. We’ve all taken our fair share of walks around the neighborhood this past month. Today, bring your headphones (or go tech-free!) and find a quiet path to walk. It’s a perfect way to feel and listen to the sounds of the natural world while feeling a deeper connection to the Earth.
- Tune into Earth Day Live. EarthDayLive2020.org is hosting a three day celebration for Earth Day from Wednesday through Friday! There will be teach-ins, musical performances, activists, artists, and more. I read up on it – it sounds seriously awesome, and the perfect way to unite people in the goal of long-term sustainability.
- Check out Miami’s own green orgs. GreenHawks Media (@thegreenhawks), Zero Waste Oxford (@zerowasteoxford), LEAP (@leapmiamioh), and Eco Reps (@muecoreps) are just a few organizations on campus making a difference in university sustainability. Check out their social media to see what they are doing today! LEAP Miami has the #taketheleapchallenge and GreenHawks Media wrote an awesome article highlighting positive environmental changes happening around the world.
If you’re anything like me, finding silver linings while at home has been a daily challenge. One huge silver lining is how positively at-home sheltering is impacting our environment. Rivers are clearing, smog is lifting, and the ozone is starting to heal. A piece by Kitty O’Meara comes to mind:

Give some extra love to yourself and the planet today.
