December 19, 2024 | No Comments

Are you ready to kick off the spring semester by diving into fraternity and sorority life? Recruitment season is right around the corner at Miami!

Here’s everything you need to know about the process and how to make the most of it, based on your questions asked on the Student Life Instagram story.

The Basics: What to Expect

Do I have to register to participate?

Yes, you do have to register to participate in the formal recruitment process in the spring. The deadline for both IFC and Panhellenic organizations is Jan. 3, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Here are the links for each org:

Are there GPA requirements?

Yes, academics come first! To join a fraternity or sorority, there are minimum GPA requirements, but they vary between councils and even chapters.

  • IFC fraternities: Minimum 2.75 GPA.
  • Panhellenic sororities: Minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • NPHC and MGC Organizations: Minimum 2.5 GPA.

Some individual chapters may have higher GPA standards, so it’s always good to double-check.

Heads up: Winter Term grades don’t count for IFC and Panhellenic recruitment eligibility in the spring.

How many days is recruitment?

Panhellenic recruitment is a two-weekend long process starting on Thursday, Jan. 30 and ending on Sunday, Feb. 9!

IFC recruitment starts on Sunday, Jan. 26 with open houses throughout the week. Bids have to be accepted by Saturday, Feb. 1.

NPHC and MGC Organizations: Membership intake happens on a chapter-by-chapter basis and may occur during the fall or spring semester.

What to expect during recruitment?

Each council has its own structure, so make sure to check their respective websites for more details and schedules. Panhellenic posts a full schedule of events for their recruitment process on their website.

Costs and Commitments

Joining a fraternity or sorority comes with financial commitments. On average, dues range from $500 to $1,000 per semester, though this varies by chapter and council. For more information about costs, check out the detailed breakdown.

Living costs may also come into play if you choose to live in the Sorority LLC or in a fraternity chapter house. While it’s not required, most sophomore sorority members do live in the Sorority LLC. Campus Services manages the LLC, and costs can be found on their website.

What Should I Wear?

Panhellenic’s website has a detailed guide on what to wear for each round. But honestly? Wear what makes you feel confident. Recruitment is about the connections you make, not your wardrobe. Pro tips:

  • Carry a bag with your heels and wear warm shoes while walking between chapters—it’s a lifesaver in Ohio’s winter weather!
  • Don’t stress about buying new clothes during Winter Term; focus on being comfortable and authentic.

The Process: Round by Round

Recruitment is a mutual selection process. For Panhellenic recruitment, you’ll start by watching chapter videos and then submit a list of your preferred chapters for the next round. As you progress, you’ll speak with current members, learn about philanthropies, and get a feel for each chapter’s vibe. Expect high energy and lots of excitement from the chapters!

For IFC, open houses and informal conversations dominate the week.

For NPHC and MGC organizations, the process is much more individualized. Membership intake typically involves an application, interview, and other chapter-specific requirements. This discreet process ensures you’re fully committed to one chapter before starting the journey.

Tips for Success

  • Trust the process: Everyone says it, but it’s true! You’ll find your home, even if it’s not where you initially expected.
  • Set boundaries with friends: Avoid comparisons. Everyone’s journey is unique, and that’s okay!
  • Stay open-minded: You may not get invited back to the maximum number of chapters for each round, and that’s totally fine. You can still find your perfect fit!
  • Don’t overthink it: Remember, it’s not that deep. Chapters want to get to know you for who you are, not just for what you wear.
  • Prepare for the weather: Ohio winters can be brutal, so plan accordingly. Warm shoes and layers are your best friends.
  • Go with your gut: Don’t compare your journey to your friends—trust your instincts about where you feel at home.
  • Set expectations: Recruitment can be overwhelming, but if it doesn’t feel right, you can withdraw and try informal recruitment later.
  • Don’t take it personally if a chapter doesn’t invite you back—you’re meant to be where you’re meant to be.
