I am pleased to announce that Lauren Forrest has been selected as the 2018-19 Dissertation Scholar for the department. Lauren’s dissertation, under the direction of April Smith, will examine the role of interoception (the ability to detect and become cognitively aware of the sensations present in the body) in differentiating among those with suicidal self-injurious behaviors, non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors, and healthy controls. Please join me in congratulating Lauren as she pursues this important work!

Call for Dean’s Scholar and Capretta Scholarship nominations
Allen McConnell and the Awards Committee announce two important recognitions for your talented undergraduate and graduate students:
The deadline for Dean’s Scholars applications has been set, with completed nominations being due before the end of the day on Friday, March 16, 2018. The College of Arts and Science Dean’s Scholarship is designed to encourage scholarly activity among Miami’s best undergraduate seniors, with students applying for support during the spring semester of their junior year. Details can be found on the Team Drive here.
The deadline for Capretta Scholarship consideration is Friday, April 6, 2018. The Capretta Scholarship is awarded to graduate students for research accomplishments completed at Miami University. Graduate students who have completed their master’s thesis and have not previously received the Capretta Scholarship are eligible for consideration. Nominations can be initiated by psychology faculty or by students (self or peer). Details can be found on the Team Drive here.
Faculty scholar award nominations due Mar. 2
We have several faculty who would be competitive for the prestigious faculty scholar awards; from Vanessa Gordon, OARS, on behalf of the CFR:
A gentle reminder that all Distinguished Scholar and Junior Faculty Scholar Awards nominations are due no later than Friday, March 2, 2018.
For information on how to submit a nomination and to see past awardees, please visit this link. The online application can be accessed directly here.
Awards for Distinguished Scholar and Junior Faculty Scholars will be given out at the University Awards Ceremony on April 18, 2018 from 5-6:30pm.
Fulbright nominations and info sessions
Karla Guinigundo, Global Initiatives, is seeking nominations for student Fulbright candidates. Although the campus deadline is in the fall, these require extensive preparation and she is offering information sessions this spring. She writes:
Global Initiatives is currently recruiting Miami’s cohort of applicants for the 2019-2020 Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program supports approximately 1,900 U.S. students to engage in study, research, or English teaching assistantships abroad annually.
Academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to increasing intercultural understanding between the United States and citizens of other countries are qualities the Fulbright program seeks in applicants.
Nominations by faculty members can be a powerful source of motivation for students. Are there students in your departments or programs that would be competitive applicants for the Fulbright U.S. student program? If so, please Nominate a Student so we can reach out with an invitation to attend one of the spring information sessions.
Student travel grants
The Council on Undergraduate Research sponsors travel grants for students who will be presenting research, and as an institutional member we are eligible to nominate students for these awards:
- For the Psychology Division travel grant, there are two funding cycles annually but note that the deadline is February 15 for the current cycle (presentation at a spring conference, such as MPA).
- For the Social Science Division travel grant, exclusively for those in social psychology, awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Note that we will be able to provide the matching funds required for this award through either Miami’s UPA or the department.
Reminder: University teaching awards
The dean has asked me to remind you all of the call for nominations for the Distinguished Educator and Graduate Student Teaching Awards:
The Distinguished Educator Award will honor two faculty members for excellence in teaching and related professional activities and the Graduate Student Teaching Award will recognize superior teaching by graduate assistants and teaching fellows.
There must be at least three nominations in order to present this award to anyone.
For additional information, you may contact me or Nancy Burnside (9-1234). These nominations must be sent electronically to Nancy by March 1.
Teaching/mentoring award for grad students
Miami may nominate up two graduate students for an award from the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS):
Two awards have been created to recognize the importance of excellence in teaching and mentoring as a component of graduate education and the preparation of graduate students for future service as college and university faculty. One award will be given to a doctoral student and one to a master’s student. Each award includes a citation and a $750 honorarium that will be presented at the MAGS 74rd Annual Meeting, April 4-6, 2018, at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, Grand Rapids, MI.
Nominating a masters and/or a doctoral candidate from your institution for one of these prestigious awards is an excellent way to recognize and encourage future faculty and support the Council of Graduate Schools’ (CGS) efforts to promote Preparing Future Faculty to meet needs in academia. Please consider submitting a nomination in each category as appropriate to recognize excellence in your graduate teaching assistants.
Please see me for more information if you are interested in nominating a student from our department to represent Miami. Submissions need to be received in the graduate school by January 19.
Society for the Teaching of Psychology awards

McKeachie Teaching Excellence Award), and the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Excellence Award.
