C65: Mitigating Overtourism Harm in Greece

The phenomenon of overtourism has emerged as a pressing concern in global tourism destinations, particularly impacting countries like Greece that are highly dependent on the tourism industry. Overtourism occurs primarily when a given area surpasses its carrying capacity with respect to tourists. This white paper investigates the detrimental effects of overtourism in Greece, particularly with respect to its impact on the cost of living. In response to the specific issue of cost of living and housing affordability concerns, this research project proposes a multifaceted policy approach comprised of a combination of welfare and austerity measures. With the burden of funding housing welfare programs being split between tourists and landlords, the expansion of these programs can be easily implemented.

This research endeavor has proved to be a pivotal step in my academic journey within the field of international studies, and I found this opportunity to expand on the work that I do in my classes to be a valuable experience. It has provided invaluable insights into economic policy creation and its application in real-world issues. This is the second white paper I have written, and I plan to write more policy-based papers in my college career. Engaging in this project has honed my research skills and deepened my understanding of the complexities underlying global challenges. I plan to go into law, and the complex analysis and problem-solving involved in this research endeavor have cultivated skills that I will carry with me as I pursue a legal career.
