C48: How do we get Black girls involved in STEM?

The general area of my research was looking at the experiences of black females in education. The research question is, how do we get black girls involved in S.T.E.M? I centered my work on the experiences of black girls in public elementary school and in urban areas. This is important to the field to understand how to make schools and companies more diverse, which I believe is important to some people when choosing jobs and a school. My work was mostly a literature review and I was guided through my own critical reflections, regarding my educational experience. While reviewing articles I focused on how data was collected and the interviewing process. This information was very interesting. My major findings were diverse responses from young girls and connections to history (racism, sexism, classism, desegregation). Moving forward with my research I would like to look at different groups that support these girls, such as mentoring programs. I want to know about women who are already successful in their career and how they are giving back. I would also like to discuss the needs and experiences of high school girls who are interested in S.T.E.M and that are black. I want to expand and get information to build programs and help systems. This experience has made me want to give back to girls and mentor people. I was recently contacted by one of my old track teammates and she was asking about computer science. I was able to share my college experience, specifically with S.T.E.M. courses and we talked for an hour about programming languages and programs that she can get involved in, which was empowering.
