Miami seniors, your time here is nearing a close. Before you know it, you’ll be wearing your red cap and gown and reminiscing on the last several years. But with that bittersweet nostalgia comes an excitement about the future! For many, the learning doesn’t stop at graduation. Grad school is a great way to advance your career and become an expert in your field. Whether it’s medical school, law school, or anything in between, here’s your guide to getting in!
Do Your Research
Look into prospective schools and programs to make sure they’re the right fit for you. Get to know the faculty of your favorite programs, as it’s likely you’ll work closely with them. If it helps, make a pros and cons list of the different schools that interest you. Start the process by finding a list of options on the Career Center website.
Save Your Money
Many schools offer programs that let you work for them, whether it’s teaching an undergraduate course, working in a research lab, or serving as a part-time staff member. In exchange, your tuition could be completely or partially covered! Make sure to do some digging and find out if there is an option for you (pro-tip: search for “assistantship” on the school’s search bar to see what’s available).
Spice Up Your Resume
Grad schools will definitely want to know what you’ve been up to during your undergraduate career. It can be tricky to navigate what to leave on your resume and what can be removed as you graduate from college. Luckily, the Center for Career Exploration and Success offers resume workshops and individual appointments. Plus they have resume drop-in hours in a variety of locations every week!

Know Your Deadlines
Most graduate school deadlines fall between October 31st and December 1st. But there’s more to it than just applying. Many graduate programs will requre the GRE® General Test or a more content-specific one. For deadlines like these, the earlier you start, the better. If you’re unhappy with your score, make sure you leave yourself with enough time to retake it.
