What is the Makerspace?

Did you know that inside King Library, Miami has a learning space with a wide variety of machines you can use at no cost to you? This equipment ranges from sewing machines to 3D printing and gives you the freedom to be as creative as possible on campus! 

The Makerspace is on the third floor of King library and you can visit by appointment only. The purpose of this space is to give students the opportunity to get hands-on learning experiences that you don’t typically receive in your regular classes. The Makerspace is for all students from any major to use, so if you’re feeling creative, make sure to check it out!

What’s in the Makerspace?

The Makerspace has around 20 machines for students to use that are totally free for students. Some of the equipment available for use includes:

  • 3D printers
  • Laser cutters
  • Sewing machines
  • Button makers
  • Virtual reality headsets
  • A private studio for recording
  • And more!

A few of these machines require training before they can be used, so be sure to double-check before scheduling your appointment. The Makerspace also provides many of the materials needed to use these machines free of cost to students. 

How to Make an Appointment

If you’re feeling inspired to make something, now is the time to make an appointment! Start with the Makerspace website. From here, you’ll be able to check out the available machinery, schedule training on a specific machine if needed, and select the times to make your appointment. 

Don’t be intimidated because you don’t know how to use a machine. You can also schedule consultations on the King Library website to help you feel more comfortable. 

Once you’re inside the Makerspace, feel free to head up to the front desk and ask for help. The Makerspace employees are very helpful and can show you all of the ropes.

The Makerspace is open Monday through Friday and the hours are available on their website. Go make your appointment and get creative!
