It finally feels like April! And while we enjoy the warmer weather, it’s definitely a reminder that the semester is nearing a close. This can be especially daunting for second years about to make the move off-campus for the first time this fall. Whether you’re moving into a house with 10 other roommates, or have a studio apartment all to yourself, moving off campus is definitely different than life in a residence hall. Luckily, Miami now offers a new program called the Tenant Education Program (TEP) that helps students navigate moving and living off campus. Plus, it even offers some discounts and incentives (that’s right, free stuff!) to those who complete the program!
The TEP workshop (totally online, no need to get out of your PJs) is comprised of four modules, each highlighting various aspects of off-campus living. The whole thing should take about a half hour. The modules include:
Renting 101 & Lease Signing
The first module takes you through the process of signing a lease and provides some helpful tips such as what to look for when hunting for a place to live.
Being A Good Neighbor: Behavior & Living in Oxford
This module teaches you about what it means to live in a community and how to be the best neighbor that you can be. It serves as a reminder that Oxford is not only a college town, but a community of families.
Breaks, Safety, & Parking
Miami’s J-Term is a lot longer than some other schools’ winter breaks. For those who don’t come back for classes, that’s a long time away from campus! This module tells you how to keep your stuff and your home safe while you are away. It also provides guidelines on Miami’s parking policies to help you avoid those pesky tickets!
Renter’s Rights & Resources
The last module takes you through the rights you have as a renter in Oxford and some of the places you can go for additional help.
