Showcasing undergraduate research

From Martha Weber, ORU:

In April 2019, the ORU will host Miami’s 25th Undergraduate Research Forum. To celebrate this milestone in Miami’s dedication to mentored undergraduate research, the ORU invites the university join us for a yearlong showcase of projects and outcomes.  If you are interested in showcasing your undergraduate research project, please contact Martha. Upcoming events include;

Wed Oct 10, 2018, King Library AIS (134), 7:15-8:00pm. Two Miami Undergraduate Research teams invite you to engage in dialogue about these current global topics:

International Studies Class Research Team Projects. Undergraduate researchers discuss investigated topics: sustainable development, global governance and environmental sustainability issues/arenas.

tPP (the terrorism Prosecution Project). For the last four semesters, a team of undergraduate students in conjunction with a faculty advisor, have completed a large-scale data project which seeks to provide a patterned analysis and taxonomy of felony criminal cases involving political violence in the United States from 1990 to present.

The ORU Invites Faculty and Students to Chat with Hughes and USS Summer Scholars who conducted an independent summer research project. Students interested in applying in to the USS 2019 program are invited to ask questions about the process of choosing a research topic, searching for a faculty mentor to collaborate with the student on the project design in preparation for application submission on 02/02/2019. ORU staff will be on hand to answer individual questions and to discuss USS Program Guidelines and application process. Light refreshments will be available.

Humanities Teaching Labs

Pepper Stetler, Associate Director of the Humanities Center, brought to my attention a new initiative of the center called Humanities Teaching Labs. The program would require you to partner with a faculty from the humanities on a specific theme, and provides $2,500 in professional development funds and $5,000 in project expenses. Applications are due November 30. From the call for proposals:

The Miami University Humanities Center invites applications for a new program that integrates faculty research and teaching in innovative ways. Humanities Teaching Labs aim to bring together faculty from the humanities and related disciplines in student-engaged research projects organized around a central theme. Embracing the true sense of laboratory experimentation familiar to the sciences, Humanities Teaching Labs will promote skill-building, hands-on experimentation and outcomes communicable to the Miami community and beyond

IRB training in-house Nov. 2

Neal Sullivan will be conducting the in-person (MU Application) training during our regular colloquium time, 3:00 – 4:15, in PSYC 125 on November 2. I arranged this for the first-year graduate students but anybody with an upcoming renewal due date might consider attending as well.

Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) competition

From Anne Schauer, for those that might be interested in seeking major funding for research equipment:

The National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) assists in the acquisition or development of major research instrumentation. Miami University may submit up to three MRI proposals (up to two that request between $100,000 and $1 million and one that requests between $1 million and $4 million) on which we are either the lead or a partner institution. To facilitate the selection of our submissions to NSF, we have set a deadline of Monday, October 15, 2018, to receive preliminary MRI proposals for internal review. You are required to provide a preliminary proposal (3-5 pages) regardless of whether you were selected as an institutional submission in previous years.

If you are interested please see me for details.

OARS Research Fair next week

OARS would like to invite you to participate in our 2nd annual Research Fair, to be held on September 11th from 11:00 am-1:00 pm. Location of the event will take place in the Heritage Room at Shriver Center. This idea was hatched in response to feedback we have received from both new and continuing faculty regarding the need for information about research support services available to them from around campus. The 1st Research Fair, last year, was largely a success and we are hoping for even greater participation and attendance this year. This event is modeled around the annual Benefits Fair and will invite units from around campus that falls into one or more of these categories:

• provide internal funds to support research (CFR, college/department level support)

• research centers

• collaborative research opportunities

• laboratory services

• evaluation/writing/statistical support services

• grant proposal development assistance

• research compliance support

• support for undergraduate research

• crowdfunding

We hope that you will join us for this event, which includes lunch and refreshments.

Graduate seminar on research mentoring

Joyce Fernandes, Professor of Biology and Director of the Office of Research for Undergraduates, is offering a graduate seminar this semester for graduate students who desire to engage in a more intentional discussion and development of mentoring undergraduate research assistants. It will meet Mondays 10:05 – 11:00, and seems to be relatively low commitment. From Joyce (whom you should contact if interested), the seminar will achieve these learning outcomes:

  • Address topics such as communication, setting goals and expectations, identifying and resolving challenges and issues, evaluating our progress as mentors, and developing a mentoring philosophy.
  • Set up mentoring goals for current mentees in the lab, and develop an assessment plan
  • Become aware of ongoing assessment of undergraduate research at Miami.
  • Develop familiarity with literature in the area of mentoring and assessing undergraduate research
