A61: Let’s Talk Period in Global Health: Addressing Cultural Taboos and Societal Perceptions about Women in Rural Karnataka

The primary focus is to open a space where menstruation can be considered a healthy and normal process among all women. Menstruation integrates countless myths and taboos across the world; with the number of myths increasing daily it has a negative implication of adolescent health. Proper menstrual health is a global health concern and getting proper knowledge on menstrual health is an education concern as well. When women don’t have access to proper care for their menstrual needs, it can lead to issues of infertility, infections, and even untimely death. In many countries across the world, women face many taboos and health risks in their communities by not receiving enough support about their periods. While taking a holistic approach to address these challenges, it is worth noting how these social stigmas are directly linked to a lack of sexual education provided at tender ages between 8-15.
