The health outcomes of people of color and those living in poverty are poorer than the health outcomes of white people and those with higher socioeconomic status. One way in which this problem manifests is in infant mortality rates. Black babies die at rates almost three times higher than white babies in Ohio’s Butler and Hamilton Counties. Distrust of healthcare providers and healthcare settings has been commonly cited as one of the underlying themes of the health disparities. This problem was presented to teams of undergraduates during 2017 Social Innovation Weekend, a social entrepreneurship and global health sponsored weekend-long course. My team developed the idea of using a photo booth in clinical settings to mitigate distrust in a clinical setting.
