C51: Calculation of Acoustic Impedance of a Clarinet

Acoustic impedance, one of the significant characteristics to describe the propagation of sound waves, can be simply defined as a ratio of acoustic pressure and resulting volume flow of air. To have a thorough understanding of acoustic impedance, in this project, we will conduct some calculations of the acoustic impedance of a clarinet and compare this result with the measurement conducted in the Physics laboratory. Since the clarinet does not have a consistent shape as the bell deviate from the body’s cylindrical shape, we have done the calculation by making two approximations: the crude approximation by treating a clarinet as one cylinder, and the better approximation by treating the bell as a separate part and combining the results with the calculation of the body’s impedance.
