C21: Ganges River

The general research area was the overall health of the Ganges River in India. While the religious and spiritual significance of the Ganges River holds great value in the community, the industrial pollution, human waste, and sewage is devastating the health of this river. The Ganges River is a lifesource to the society surrounding it, however, with the continuation of the desecration, it may become unable to support life. We used an approach that centered on the statistics and studies relating to the overall health of the river and discovered how the pollution and the overall poor treatment of the river are directly correlated. The research question that has guided our research is: Given the sanctity of the Ganges river, how has it disintegrated into its current status? This is relevant because the air of spiritual belief and religion enveloping the river and surrounding communities has negatively affected the social and commercial treatment of the Ganges River. Some of our major findings include: A unique bacteriophage that cleanses the river approximately 17 times faster than any other river, pollution that leads to 300,000 Indian children dead annually, and how climate change has decreased the water flow from the Himalayan glaciers. These findings encourage our societies to look internally as to the real reason our resources are dying.
