A100: Leadership With Bridges Scholars

I participated in a two semester, First Year Research Experience [FYRE] course, for Bridges Scholars students. The goal of this program is to encourage students from diverse backgrounds; students with different race/ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. First and second year students at Miami are required to live on campus, and can choose to live in a Living and Learning Community, also called an LLC. Being in an LLC, places you around like minded individuals, or individuals with similar interests. This year was the first year that the Bridges LLC was offered (which is what I chose), so I was able to take an LLC associated course with students who lived in the same hall as me.

The course was called “Academic Success of Bridges Scholars”, and was focused on conducting research about factors that affect academic success. A class during the 2018-19 academic year identified broad topics to investigate such as Leadership, Student Organization, Success in STEM, and Mentorship. My topic focussed on exploring leadership. I wanted to assess the Bridges program at its current state, and determine how leadership could increase the overall undergraduate experience and success of its members. As a group, we conducted literature reviews, deployed surveys, and analyzed survey data. A progress report will be presented.
