Parking

Q: If you get a parking pass for the garage, do you also have to get a yellow permit?

A: (assuming you are an upper-class student or meet the criteria to have a car on campus) Yes, the garage permit is an add-on. Must have a surface-level permit in order to purchase the garage pass.

Q: Can I park in any lot on campus during the weekend, even if I don’t have a red permit?

A: A parking permit is always required when parking on campus, including evenings, weekends, and holidays (unless you park at a meter or in a garage). On weekends, vehicles with any color permit may park in areas that are restricted to red permits during the weekday. Only the south part of Maple and Oak Streets does not require permits during weekends and evenings. As always, check posted signage before parking. Check out Parking FAQs for more!

Q: If I’m from out of state, how do I register my car to bring it to campus?

A: As a first-year student, you are allowed to have a car on campus if your permanent home address is outside of a 200-mile, straight-line radius from the university or if you have an approved exceptional transportation need. Parking passes will go on sale in early August!

Q: Can I park in my dorm’s parking lot for free, or do I need to keep it in designated lot?

A: Best to keep it in the designated lot until you are ready to move out!

Q: Are there any overnight parking options for commuters?

A: Commuters purchase yellow commuter permits and park in the commuter lots; these lots do not allow overnight parking (otherwise they would be filled by residential parkers, and there would be no spaces for commuters to park each day). You would need to move your car out of the commuter lot and into a residential section that allows yellow permits by 2 a.m. or risk being cited.

Q: Where can I park with a blue permit?

A: Check out the Parking Services “Parking areas” website.

Q: How do I get a parking pass for Heritage Commons?

A: Heritage Commons residents will have this option on their online housing portal when student permits go on sale (typically early August).

Q: Can you put your license plate number in your dash if you don’t have a front plate and a back in?

A: If you do not have a front license plate, please do not back in or pull through a double row of spaces since that would obscure your rear plate.

Q: How do we pick up the parking passes that we bought for the semester?

A: No physical parking passes; it’s all virtual. connected to your license plate!

Q: How long can my parents keep their car in the parking lot after my move-in slot?

A: No ticketing for passes this whole week, so they should be fine in one of our large lots!

Q: Do you need a parking pass for move-in day?

A: No, no parking pass needed on move-in day or during Welcome Weekend.

Q: Is parking during finals week free?

A: No, parking is the same as usual on campus. There is a “log in policy” if you need to load/unload your car outside your hall. Email [email protected] with your name and location, and you’ll have 20 minutes to load up.

Q: Can a second-year student living on campus buy a red parking pass?

A: Red parking passes are reserved for Miami employees. Check out student parking options!

Q: Who do I contact about getting a red pass due to disability?

A: Students are not eligible for faculty/staff red permits; however, they may park in red permit areas if they have a valid ADA placard and purchase a student parking permit. You may email a photo of your ADA placard to [email protected] to get started.

Q: How do off-campus students park at the rec without getting ticketed? Is it free?

A: You’ll need to follow regular parking regulations based on your parking pass (if you purchase one). You can pay to park in the campus garage or walk/take the bus to the Rec like you would for any other campus building!
