C66: Do Perceived Sorority Tiers Impact Members’ Drinking Habits?

Alcohol consumption is endemic on University campuses across the United States despite vehement interventions (Winters et al., 2011). Students, typically between the ages of 18 and 22, suffer academic, socioemotional, and physical consequences as a result of problem drinking. More than half of all college students drink alcohol at any point during the span of a month, with many partaking in binge/excessive drinking (White & Hingston, 2014). A particular population of college students, sorority members and initiates, might be at an increased risk for binge drinking and problematic alcohol consumption. Approximately 3%, or 9 million college students are sorority members on college campuses (Fact Sheet Fraternity & Sorority Life, n.d.). The overarching purpose of my study will be to analyze the perception of sorority tiers and drinking habits among sorority members.
