C27: How Members of Greek Life and Student Athletics Contribute to Campus Culture Regarding the Sexual Assault Perpetration on College Campuses: A Review of The Literature

This literature review is an examination of How Members of Greek Life and Athletics Contribute to Campus Culture Regarding the Sexual Assault perpetration on college campuses. The review identified target audiences in regards to perpetration through prevalence, hypermasculinity, rape myth acceptance, alcohol involvement, as well as campus culture. The relevancy is to raise awareness on college campuses of susceptible populations of sexual assault. Raising awareness will allow programs and policies to be adopted and adapted at universities to combat sexual assault. It was found that social acceptance, alcohol, social gatherings and environments, peer pressure, and desired institutional reputations leads to the increase of sexual assault on college campuses, specifically in this case regarding Greek Life and Student Athletics. With this information and the help of the self study guide produced by RAAND, we will be able to assess prevention methods to ensure their effectiveness in decreasing sexual assault. After this assessment, we will provide recommendations based on the information found in this literature review to help formulate better programs, practices, and policies that can be utilized at Miami University and, later, other universities. It will allow us to ensure that universities are following correct protocol as well as tailoring programs that are specific for Greek life and athletics. This topic refers to the future careers of all undergraduate group members as sexual assault can lead to life-long mental disorders. In understanding which populations are more susceptible to both perpetration and victimization of sexual assault, this will allow us to better treat our patients.
