A08: Food Insecurity and the Healthcare Experience of Adults Living in Over-the-Rhine

The primary focus of this study was to understand food insecurity in the healthcare experience of adults in Over-the-Rhine, Ohio. Food insecurity is often a result of living in a food desert and highlights immeasurable inequality in healthy eating. The conditions that induce food insecurity are also explicitly linked to housing insecurity issues . After conducting social determinants of health (SDOH) screenings with care coordinators at Crossroad Health Center and matching patients with resources, food insecurity and housing insecurity demonstrated a need for interventions to target delaying behavior for medical attention. The combination of a food insecure inducing environment and a housing crisis calls for political action that better meets the needs of the OTR residents. Solutions that could be done to fight against this issue in OTR include restorative urban planning efforts for fresh food options. These urban planning efforts should incorporate integrated food access and housing security as well as urban farming landscaping.
