Budapest, ca. 1931

Begun in 1896, the Hősök Tere or Millennium Memorial commemorates the 1,000th anniversary of the settling of the Hungarian state. The monument is a popular tourist site and a place of national history and pride. Completion of the monument was delayed until 1929 as a result of WWI. Set between each column are sculptures of Hungarian kings and heroes. During a rebuilding effort to rebuild after WWII, five statues of Habsburg rulers were replaced with other heroes. Featured in this poster is one segment of the tripartite complex capped with symbolic bronze sculptures of “Labor and Wealth” and “War.”
