CSI-05: Experiencing Cultural Appreciation

Our presentation discusses what cultural appreciation is, what it means to celebrate it, and how our experiences will shape our future as art educators. Our stories begin as young children, where we both had negative experiences regarding the representation for Native American stories. Through our experiences being personally mentored by members of the Myaamia Tribe, teaching a lesson about their culture and language to 6th grade students in the downtown Cincinnati area, and attending the Myaamia Winter Gathering in Oklahoma we were able to go through the unlearning process about what we had learned in our formative years and gain a deeper understanding of cultural appreciation and its importance in the world.
