C30: Student Knowledge of Campus Composting: A Qualitative Data Analysis

The OSCAR system on the Miami University Oxford campus is a relatively new automated composting system put into place in the Fall semester of 2023. To understand the impact that system has on campus composting initiatives, a survey was conducted to test Miami University students’ knowledge of composting systems on and off campus. For this project, we used data from a Qualtrics survey of 106 Miami University undergraduate and Graduate students for a better understanding of the student population’s composting knowledge. The goal of this survey was to analyze and research quantitative data to help the university better implement education around composting and the OSCAR system. This early data serves as a reference point for future composting systems such as OSCAR, and will help university administrators better educate students on composting initiatives and thereby how it ties to sustainability efforts around both the Miami University campus and Oxford as a greater whole.
