B76: The Effect of Protein Supplementation and Resistance Exercise Training on Specific Measures of Muscle Mass Growth: Methods of a Meta-Analysis

We have gathered studies to properly look at the outcome of protein supplementation on resistance training on muscle mass, including muscle thickness, muscle fibers, and cross-sectional area of the muscle in both young and old populations. These studies involve participants of >18y, of both sexes, in any degree of health or physical activity (i.e., untrained, recreationally active and trained adults). Resistance exercise and protein and/or amino acid nutrition with and without other nutrients are implemented. We will compare the resistance exercise type, training and duration, protein and/or amino acid nutritional types, study size, methods, nutritional timing, and period of measurement of each study. Specifically, an age comparison is required as a main analysis or as a subgroup analysis or just an analysis of older adults. The results will include myofiber size and muscle mass measures; not including only lean mass or fat-free mass. The design of these studies will be randomized clinical trials that are double-blind with a protein and placebo intervention. Studies must be resistance exercise training studies >4 weeks in duration that include a measure of strength, functional testing, lean mass and/or muscle mass.
