A10-T: Evaluating the Effectiveness of QR Codes in Environmental Education and Outreach

A new trend in environmental education is to include Quick Response (QR) codes on educational signage. A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that can be read by most smartphones which redirects users to online content. Utilizing QR codes in an educational setting may provide educators and students more interactive experiences as well as access to additional learning resources. Previous research has investigated recognition and use of QR codes, particularly within marketing. However, few studies have explored QR code usage within education or the perception of QR codes across various socio-demographics. Further research focused specifically on QR code usage in education is necessary to fill the significant gap in literature. The focus of this research is to explore the effectiveness of QR codes in informal environmental education and outreach. Observational studies and surveys were completed at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden to assess visitors’ perceptions of QR codes on educational signage. Statistical analyses of visitor survey responses were conducted to evaluate the relationship between QR code insights and the socio-demographics of education and age. Additionally, 150 postcards with QR codes and 150 postcards with weblinks were randomly distributed to residents in Oxford Township to determine adoption rates of QR codes on outreach materials. While the study reported low usage rates, feedback was generally high and surveys indicated more knowledge of QR codes than previous research had indicated. Results also showed that younger populations were significantly more knowledgeable and comfortable utilizing QR codes. The finding of this study could be used by educators to more effectively integrate QR codes into their teaching practices.
