How do I set up an anonymous survey in Canvas and view its results?

Canvas logo

If you haven’t already realized this, surveys can be created through a quiz’s settings in Canvas; surveys you’ve created will be displayed under the Quizzes link in your course navigation menu, but they’ll appear in a separate list below your quizzes (so you’ll need to scroll down to find them if you have a lot of quizzes in your course).

Creating an anonymous survey

Just change these two settings to turn a Canvas quiz into an anonymous survey:

  1. Click the Ungraded Survey option in the Quiz Type menu.
  2. Select the Keep Submissions Anonymous checkbox.

That’s it! Know that if you change your mind about your survey’s anonymity, no worry. You can go back and change this setting at any time.

Viewing an anonymous survey’s responses

Then when you’re ready to review your survey’s responses, just go back to your survey, then click (1) the Survey Statistics link on the right side of the page. You’ll see an overview of all responses to your survey, but instead of seeing any actual student names, you’ll see “Student 1,” “Student 2,” etc.

If you want to view detailed responses to your survey, just click (2) the Student Analysis button at the top of the Quiz Summary page. A spreadsheet of all survey responses will download as a .csv file. Again, the students’ names will be anonymized in this document.
