Updated advice on reporting statistical methods and results

After giving and receiving lots of advice about conveying results, I and others put together some advice we hope others find useful. Some of it is kind of in weeds, but it is often the sorts of things I wind up saying again and again to graduate students as they prepare their theses, dissertations, and first manuscripts.

We rely on, compile, and where possible, credit the advice of many others.

Reporting statistical methods and results

A great field season

We wrapped up a great field season, hunting down male and female flowers of American persimmon (_Diospyros virginiana_), at selected sites throughout most of the range. Starting in mid-April, Dr. Ross sampled trees in TX, LA, and GA, and together we covered areas in TN, NC, KY, IN, OH, IL, and MO! These samples add a substantial collection to Dr. Ross’s current collection, and will help us address important questions in the biogeography and genetics of the Diospyros reproductive system.

PhD, MS Assistantships in Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology at Miami University

The Biology Department at Miami University has several faculty with active research programs in terrestrial plant ecology, within a broader strength in ecology. Graduate students pursue a PhD in Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology (EEEB) , a PhD or MS in Biology, or a PhD or MS in Botany .

Each student works with a mentor on thesis/dissertation research, and receives additional input guidance from faculty members with expertise in complementary disciplines. Research foci within our program include mycorrhizal interactions, nutrient dynamics in forest ecosystems, forest community dynamics, and invasive species ecology.

Graduate students have access to facilities including the Miami University Ecology Research Center, Willard Sherman Turrell Herbarium http://herbarium.muohio.edu/, the Miami University Natural Areas, Hueston Woods State Park and State Nature Preserve, the Geospatial Analysis Center, the Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics, and the Center for Advanced Microscopy and Imaging, and the Center for Aquatic and Watershed Sciences.

Graduate students are supported by teaching or research assistantships that include a stipend and tuition waiver. If you are interested, please contact one of the faculty members listed above. Applications are due January 1 and include a personal statement, CV, contact information for 3 references, transcripts, and, for international applicants, recent TOEFL scores.
