The stress, anxiety, and constant pressures of university life take a significant toll on students. While traditional mental health support is crucial, research highlights a powerful, yet often overlooked, intervention: spending time in nature.

The Outdoor Pursuit Center (OPC) is thrilled to announce that they will be offering a series of wellness-themed hiking trips during the Spring semester designed specifically to combat student stress.

The Science of the “Nature Prescription”

This initiative is grounded in science. Studies show that extended time in a natural setting, (especially for two or more hours) offers tangible, physiological benefits. A nature prescription can:

  • Lower the stress hormone cortisol.
  • Reduce blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Improve mood and enhance cognitive function.

These trips are intentionally designed to satisfy the need for extended engagement in larger regional green spaces, aligning with the “Nature Pyramid” framework. Crucially, the OPC aims to overcome the primary obstacle for many students: transportation. They are bridging the gap between campus and the deeper, immersive experiences that students need.

Beyond the Trail: Mindful Movement

The Outdoor Pursuits Center’s wellness hikes will target students seeking a meaningful opportunity to “push the reset button” and escape the daily grind. The experience will be elevated by knowledgeable OPC staff, who are trained in Mental Health First Aid and Wilderness First Aid.

Staff will integrate practical relaxation exercises into the hike itself, including mindful walking, breathing techniques, sensory activities, and stretching. The goal is to teach students self-care strategies they can easily incorporate into their daily routines, fostering mental resilience long after they return to campus.
