Students Learn About Healthy Relationships at the Regional Wellness Center

By Clare Sherman —

On Thursday, August 28th, Miami Hamilton’s own Regional Wellness Studio hosted the “Bae-Goals and Bagels” event as part of the “Weeks of Welcome” series at MUH. Amidst the stressors that accompany week one of the new semester, students were able to take a step back, enjoy a snack, and learn helpful tips for building and maintaining a healthy relationship.

At this event, a variety of bagel and cream cheese flavors, as well as a self-serve coffee station, were set up on tables for participants to grab as they entered the studio. Several stacks of fliers were set out next to the refreshments, containing information on the differences between healthy and toxic romantic relationships. Students learned that knowing the difference between the two types of relationships is a crucial step in navigating romance in college. Being unaware of each set of characteristics can be harmful, as it may lead individuals to overlook hurtful behaviors or miss out on making supportive, positive connections.

So what exactly defines a healthy romantic relationship? The Regional Wellness Studio describes a healthy relationship as enjoyable, with the effect being enhanced self-esteem. Confidence, mutual growth, and vulnerability are all “green flags” that, when present, indicate a relationship is benefiting both individuals.

Conversely, an unhealthy relationship results in unhappiness, recurring conflict, and diminished self-worth. Behaviors such as manipulation, yelling, substance abuse, emotional blaming, codependency, and even physical violence are “red flags” that indicate a toxic dynamic.

In the event of relationship violence, described as “a pattern of physical or psychological control which one person exerts over the other in order to get his or her way,” students are encouraged to find help by confiding in someone they trust and utilizing the counseling services on campus.

In addition to educating students on relationships and other aspects of a healthy lifestyle, the Regional Wellness Studio, located in the Hamilton Campus gymnasium, provides an inviting space for students to relax and socialize on campus. Some students stop by to destress with crafting activities and fidget toys, while others take advantage of the comfortable atmosphere to tackle assignments.

Continuing its commitment to offering an educational, community-oriented space for students, the Regional Wellness Studio plans to offer events similar to “Bae-goals and Bagels” every Thursday. Keep an eye on your email for details on what healthy lifestyle tips and free activities will be available at the Regional Wellness Studio’s next event.
