Welcome back to our Career Fair Tips series! In part three, we’ll cover how to stand out on the day of the fair. At Nucor Raw Materials Group, we love hiring Miami University students because they are driven, intelligent, and creative. We can’t wait to meet you at the Spring Career and Internship Fair on February 15!

When you visit our table, talk about yourself outside of the classroom. Highlight any interests that will help you stand out from the other students attending the fair. Employers recall fun facts about students more quickly, especially when they’ve met so many people over the course of the day. Always have a smile on your face and make eye contact.

Show your enthusiasm and confidence! Butterflies will naturally lessen throughout the day as you engage in more conversations. Practice your pitch in the mirror or with friends ahead of time. For more about perfecting your Elevator Pitch, view part two of our Career Fair Tips series.

Do research on the companies you are interested in and show what you know. Ask questions that are specific to the company and role you are interested in. For example, a good question to ask about our Operations Leadership program is “What areas of the business will I rotate through and what challenges have other trainees faced throughout the program?” It’s also important to share why you came over to talk or what stands out about our company to you. This will go a long way!

First impressions are critical. Dress according to the expected attire of your profession. When in doubt, dress as you would if you were interviewing. Remember: it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Also, doing a career fair solo looks so much better than going up to a table with a group of friends. Stand out as an individual!

Ask for ways you can stay in touch. Knowing the best method and best times to contact us will help you stay at top of our minds when we’re filling roles at our company. If you had a great conversation with us, let us know! A follow-up email can be very meaningful, especially if it helps us recall a great conversation we had with you.
