Career Fair Advice

With career fair quickly approaching, it’s easy to feel stressed and overwhelmed. Read below for some of the best tips from CCES to make sure you have a great experience.

  1. Practice your “Miami Hello.” The Miami Hello is essentially your elevator pitch. It should include: your name, major(s), where you’re from, what you’ve done in the past, what you’re doing currently and what you hope to do in the future. This sets you up for an engaging conversation with an employer and lets them know who you are and why you’d be a good fit at their company.
  2. Plan out which employers you’re going to talk to. Handshake has the full list of employers attending the fair, so look through and choose who you want to talk to. Then, use the Fairs App to make a game plan of where they’re located and what order you’re going to talk to them. The app shows you the table number of each employer and where they’re located within Millet.
  3. Bring at least 10 copies of your resume and carry them in a portfolio or folder. If you want, you can even print your resume on resume paper available at the Oxford Copy Shop uptown.
  4. Take notes on your conversation with employers. A good tip is to ask for a business card and then write down 2 bullet points summarizing the conversation afterwards. You can use this in later networking emails or thank-you emails so the recruiter is more likely to remember you.

Most importantly, remember to be confident! Employers want to know what makes you different from everybody else. Do your research, make eye contact, dress to impress and you’ll be good to go!
