Graduate Research Assistantship Opportunities
The Biomechatronics System Design Lab, led by Dr. Sk Hasan at Miami University, focuses on the design, modeling, control, and experimental validation of advanced robotic systems for rehabilitation, human assistance, and human-centered mechatronics. The lab integrates robotics, mechanical design, mechatronics, control systems, instrumentation, artificial intelligence, and sensor-based human-robot interaction to develop intelligent and adaptive technologies for human movement support.
Our primary research emphasis is on human upper-extremity and lower-extremity exoskeleton robots. Current and future projects include wearable robotic design, dynamic modeling, nonlinear and adaptive control, impedance control, AI-based assistance, multimodal sensing, digital twins, IoT-enabled rehabilitation systems, real-time data acquisition, and experimental evaluation of robotic rehabilitation platforms.
Student Opportunities
We are actively seeking motivated MS and Ph.D. students with strong interests in robotics, mechatronics, control systems, mechanical design, CAD/CAM, embedded systems, sensing, and experimental research. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to innovative research projects involving robotic exoskeleton design, actuator and sensor integration, control algorithm development, system implementation, simulation, testing, and performance optimization.
Graduate researchers in the lab are expected to develop strong technical skills in areas such as CAD modeling, dynamic system modeling, MATLAB/Simulink simulation, LabVIEW-based data acquisition, Arduino or embedded hardware, sensor integration, control implementation, robotic system testing, technical writing, and research dissemination. Students may also participate in journal publications, conference presentations, proposal development, prototype development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Desired Background
Applicants with experience or strong interest in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply: CAD/CAM, mechanical design, robotics, mechatronics, control systems, system dynamics, instrumentation, sensors, actuators, embedded systems, MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, Arduino, Python, machine learning, rehabilitation robotics, wearable robotics, and human-robot interaction.
Successful students should be self-motivated, curious, hardworking, collaborative, and interested in solving real-world engineering problems. Prior research experience is helpful but not required. A strong willingness to learn, build systems, conduct experiments, analyze data, and communicate technical results is essential.
How to Apply
Interested students are encouraged to contact Dr. Sk Hasan with a brief statement of research interests, a current CV or résumé, unofficial transcripts, and examples of relevant project or research experience if available. Applicants should clearly describe their interests in robotics, exoskeleton systems, mechatronics, control, rehabilitation engineering, or related areas.
If you are passionate about robotics, human-machine interaction, biomechatronic systems, and assistive technologies, we invite you to explore opportunities in the Biomechatronics System Design Lab and contribute to research that advances rehabilitation, mobility assistance, and intelligent robotic systems.
