The Southwest Ohio Classic Swimming Competition hosts the largest high school swimming competition in the nation, with over 2,800 swimmers competing across 11 preliminary sites. This meet, which took place in January, provided some proud moments for the Makos Swim Team. This is an important event for highschool swimming, but beyond the competition, it is also a celebration of well-rounded student-athletes who excel in and out of the pool.
Each year, the Southwest Classic honors six seniors with a prestigious scholarship, recognizing their commitment to athletics, academics, leadership, and community involvement. This year, three of those six recipients are proud Makos Seniors: Cooper Burt, Caroline Mignery, and Hazel Culver. Their achievements showcase their individual dedication, as well as the strong culture fostered by the Makos team and its coaches.

The selection process for this scholarship looks beyond athletic achievement, valuing scholarship, sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship. The intense competition among applicants highlights the remarkable achievement of three winners from the same team. It’s a testament to the Makos program’s emphasis on building well-rounded athletes who excel beyond the lanes of the pool. Whether they have been part of Makos for ten years or just two, these senior leaders have left a lasting impact on their teammates and the broader swimming community.
The Southwest Classic isn’t just about competition; it’s about honoring student-athletes who embody the balance of sport, school, and service. Cooper, Caroline, and Hazel have set the standard, inspiring younger swimmers to follow in their footsteps. Their achievement is not just a win for them, but for their high schools, families, and, of course, the Makos team.
Congratulations to these exceptional student-athletes!
