This photo was taken on the porch of the Godfroy family home near Peru, Indiana around 1897. At the center of the photo are many precious family heirlooms from Gabriel’s parents – Palaansa, Seekaahkweeta, and Saakacaahkwa – and the parents of his second wife – Šiipaakana and Mahkoonsihkwa, also known as Frances Slocum. Two pieces of ribbonwork in this image have the same checkerboard design as the woman’s leggings in the case below. The Godfroy family sold most of the objects in this photo to generate revenue as increasingly their lands were lost and they suffered poverty.
