Brandon Fletcher—
No one likes to deal with difficult people. Recently, Jerry Martin, the director of several different programs on Miami Regionals’ campuses, gave a lecture to students and faculty about leaders and underachievers. He also went into detail about a particular type of underachiever: the narcissist.
Jerry Martin said narcissism is about people who grow their egos according to what they look like, what they own, what title they have, and the clothes they wear. When individuals are being narcissistic, they are indulging in a world they have created where they appear more grandiose than they actually are. In this delusion, they tend to allow themselves to break boundaries and deceive themselves. Jerry Martin advises people to say, “I do have my boundaries. I will not buy into the victim mentality which can stop people from achieving what they want to achieve.”
Jerry Martin also emphasized the importance of being a good leader. He said, “You don’t have to be in a leadership position to be a good leader.” He said when he hires individuals for his programs, experience is not always the most relevant quality. He expressed that he wants someone who is full of energy and enthusiasm to do the job, and he talked about people who would be jealous of someone with less experience getting a promotion instead of themselves, saying, “They have this entitlement for being in a position for so long. They have a jealousy for moving up and they will attack with a variety of insults.”
No one really wants to be around negativity, Not really. If we had the choice to be in a positive environment or a negative environment, we would all choose the positive. I think this is why an employee who is motivated is much more valuable than the employee with experience only. Negativity can destroy any environment. To achieve the most in life, it is best for us to embrace positivity and to not listen to those who tend to bring us down, while always making room for growth and improvement.
