Our Mission

The Instrumentation Laboratory is a technological partner to teaching and research throughout Miami University through its support of instrumentation and laboratory equipment. This partnership is achieved through competent staff, suitably equipped facilities, and the array of services available to both faculty and students.

Instrumentation Laboratory services are maintenance and repair of instruments, laboratory apparatus, and glassware; consultation and training on laboratory equipment; and design and construction of specialized apparatus. Facilities are the electrical and electronic laboratory, the mechanical laboratory and machine shop, and the welding shop. Multidisciplinary access to an inventory of major analytical instruments is provided.

The facility consists of:

  • Electronics Support Laboratory – The Electronics Laboratory is equipped to repair and calibrate the electrical and electronic parts of most laboratory apparatus found at Miami University and to construct electronic circuits including printed circuit boards.
  • Mechanical Support Laboratory and Machine Shop – The Mechanical Laboratory maintains apparatus ranging from delicate balances and microscopes to large drilling rigs and hydraulic presses. Computer-controlled machine tools facilitate the machining of complex shapes and precise duplication of parts. Mig, tig, stick welding, and limited sheet metal work are also available.
  • Instrumentation Software Development – INFO TBD
  • Glass Support – The IL is presently outsourcing all of its glass needs. If you have a glass need, please reach out to the Director of the IL (Mike Weeks, weeksmr@MiamiOH.edu, 513-529-7216).
  • Other – We provide on-site service for instruments that are too sensitive or bulky to be transported conveniently. We are not staffed or equipped to pick up or deliver equipment.
