This week we’re spotlighting Heather McCowan, and senior majoring in Strategic Communication and Individualized Studies, from Cincinnati, OH. This summer, Heather worked as a Retail Banking Intern at KeyBank and was offered a full-time position as a Retail Management Associate upon graduation. Heather talks about how she found this opportunity, advice for students and working for KeyBank.

What will you be doing in your role at KeyBank?
This rotational program allows me to experience various lines of business within the retail branches of Southwest Ohio. Following the successful completion of the 3-month program, I will start my role as a Relationship Manager. I’ll serve as a trusted advisor, providing corporate, commercial and private bank clients with sound advice based on a deep understanding of their unique financial needs. I’m most excited to learn more about the various roles within retail banking and work on my professional development.
What advice do you have for students looking for jobs or internships?
I found this job at the Fall Career Fair during my junior year. I started as a Retail Banking Intern during the summer of 2019 and was offered a full-time position at the end of the summer.
I’ve always visited each career fair and utilized Handshake to help me find internships and jobs throughout my career at Miami University.
My best advice is to remember that your major doesn’t equal your career! Give every opportunity a fair shot, even if it doesn’t seem like it’s your dream internship or job. You never know what may be a perfect fit for you.
