Sign Language and Autism @ Miami

Under the direction of Dr. Aaron Shield, the SL@M Lab seeks to understand how various populations of children and adults acquire signed and spoken languages, especially in the presence of autism. Current projects include:

  • Parent/Child Interaction Study: This study investigates how parents can effectively manage their autistic children’s visual attention. If you have an autistic child between the ages of 3-6, please consider filling out our screening form here.
  • Benefits of ASL study: This study seeks to understand if ASL exposure might benefit autistic children. If you have an autistic child between the ages of 6-14, please consider filling out our screening form here.
  • Spanish/ASL Study: This study looks at cognitive predictors of language learning. If you are currently enrolled in first or second semester ASL or Spanish classes at Miami, please consider filling out our screening form here.
