Did you know that Miami offers Beginner Rock Climbing and Intermediate Rock Climbing classes for credit? These 2 credit courses are offered through the SLM (Sports Leadership & Management) department. Both classes meet at the Rec in the OPC (Outdoor Pursuit Center) and at the climbing wall. If you’re looking for a fun class that you can be active in then this is the class for you.
The Beginner Rock Climbing class doesn’t require any prior climbing experience. In class you’ll receive all the tools you need to learn how to identify climbing holds, use various climbing techniques, tie figure 8 knots, and use a rope for belaying. The course will put you on the path to go from bouldering to top-rope climbing. Over the 6 weeks of this sprint class you’ll notice improvement in your climbing ability and confidence.
The Intermediate Class is offered in the 2nd sprint of Spring semester. The Intermediate class requires that you have taken Beginner Rock Climbing and that you have your belay certification at the climbing wall. The Intermediate class focuses on lead climbing. Lead climbing is the next step after top rope climbing. This is when the climber starts with the rope on the ground and clips their rope into protection (via quickdraws) on the way up. This way the climber is protected from a fall from their last clip in point and the belayer manages the rope. Intermediate students have the opportunity to be certified to lead climb and lead belay at Miami’s wall. The course also includes an outdoor rock climbing trip to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. The trip is concluded with a visit to Miguel’s Pizza for dinner.
