Create Anything at the Middletown Tech Lab

By Brandon Fletcher—

On March 6th, 2024, a public event was held at the Middletown campus titled You Can Make It
@ the TEC Lab Makerspace. The event was mostly wood carving and painting. Participants created dozens of creations using the Makerspace’s laser carver. Participants selected from a variety of templates and the files were delivered electronically to thhe Makerspace’s lazer carver. Jennifer Hicks of Circulation and Resource Reserves said, “Today we are laser engraving thin sheets of wood. Participants can choose from a variety of files. After the designs are cut, participants can use a variety of supplies to finish their project.

During the event, participants used paint, keychains, and jewelry hardware to make their
creations come to life, but that’s not all that this space has to offer. The Makerspace in Harvey-
Garner Library has a variety of resources to create almost anything, including 3D printers, a
vinyl cutter, a heat press, a sewing machine, laser cutters, 3D pens, paints, and other craft
supplies.

John Burke, Library Director, said, “I enjoy the creativity that people are showing. It’s neat to see
people make things the way they want it. It’s a magical part of the Makerspace. I just like seeing
the creativity. It’s great to see people apply their creativity to their own individual creations …
I’ve been here for 21 years. I think seeing the Makerspace take off is one of the most exciting
things this year.”

The Makerspace is open from 8 am to 7 pm on Monday through Friday. Students can drop in
during working hours or even submit a poster printing or 3D printing request online. The
Makerspace is dedicated to supporting the creativity of students and providing guidance to help
their talents grow.
