Topics and Categories for Proposals

We invite proposals for presentations on any topics related to enhancing the quality and effectiveness of higher education teaching and student learning. Proposals may be interdisciplinary or specific to one or a group of disciplines, but must demonstrate excellence in at least one of the four categories below:

• Research: Reports important results from own experience or research; describes problem clearly; provides baseline data; explains what researcher has done and why; and provides results.
• Innovation: Proposes innovation of theory, approach, or process of teaching; provides original and creative ideas based on results of research by self or others; and outlines proposed strategy for testing effectiveness of ideas.
• Application: Describes and assesses exemplary practice, for example, in one’s own course, informed by theory and the literature; includes applied research and research that confirms or challenges previous outcomes.
• Integration: Integrates research of others in meaningful way; compares or contrasts theories; critiques results; and/or provides context for future exploration.

Lilly Proposal Guidelines

ALL Lilly proposals must meet the following requirements:

• General
  • ALL authors must be entered in the proposal submission form in order to appear in the conference schedule.
  • A category must be selected for your proposal from the four choices above.
• Abstract
  • Abstract must be 500 characters or less and be entered into abstract box on the proposal form.
• Proposal Paper
  • Paper must use Original Lilly Conference on College Teaching Proposal Template.
  • Paper must be made anonymous (no reference to author’s name(s) or institution) for reviewers.
  • Paper should be grounded in the teaching and learning literature on your topic. Include parenthetical in-text citations and a reference list at the end in APA 7 format.
  • Paper must not exceed 6500 characters, including references.

At this time, you need submit only a proposal, not a completed manuscript. After the conference, you are invited to develop your proposal into a full manuscript for submission to the Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, an international, refereed journal (see the Call for Manuscripts). You need not submit your manuscript until you have received feedback on your session at or after the conference.

Presentation Formats for Sessions at the Conference

Upon acceptance, you will be assigned one of three formats for your presentation:

• 45-minute individual concurrent session
  • Guidelines for 45-minute concurrent sessions
• Conference poster session
  • Guidelines for interactive poster sessions
• Pre-conference workshop
  • Guidelines for pre-conference workshops

Notification of Acceptance

We will notify the primary presenter via e-mail by August 31 as to whether your proposal has been accepted and, if so, the presentation format you have been assigned.

Important Reminders

• If your proposal does not meet the submission requirements stated above, it will be rejected without review. Please follow the instructions carefully!
• We will make every effort to assign you the presentation format you indicate on the submission form; however, due to scheduling needs you may be assigned another format.
• Design your session to encourage dialogue. Plan at least 2 interactive activities for participants.
• Half-hour prep sessions will be scheduled in the mornings and right after lunch for presenters to test their tech setup and ask any questions before their presentations.
• Presenters will have the opportunity to upload their session handout(s) to the Lilly Conference website before the conference.
• If accepted, your proposal will be posted on the Conference website. You should keep in mind that the participants at your session may have read it.
• Presenters are encouraged to join in the Conference spirit by interacting with other presenters and attendees during the entire conference.
• If contact information changes for you or any other members of your presentation group, please notify us as soon as possible.

Note: Submitting a proposal does not register you for the conference. All presenters, including any copresenters, must be registered. Unfortunately, there are no funds to cover registration, travel, or lodging expenses for presenters. Early registration is recommended because of limited space.
