Fall Move-In a Success

IMG_0018Following the #move-in feed on Slack yesterday, it sounds like LOTS of first-year students were given a friendly helping hand from IT staff volunteers in the halls, in the tents, and online. Even President Crawford stopped by the Maple Street tent – he needed directions to South Quad.

Move-In by the #s:

  • Em S. reported a grand total of 8334 Twitter impressions yesterday – way to go, Em!
  • The Support Desk handled 196 calls, 112 in the student queue.
  • Campus operators handled 230 calls.
  • Pete F. reports that the #1 paper resource at the Maple Street Station was the dining hall hours

Working Healthy – it Can Be Easy

According to CIO Magazine, being more healthy at work can be achieved by watching out for 10 pitfalls. Here are a couple of quotes from the article. Do you see yourself here?

• Extended sitting can cause deep vein thrombosis and poor cardiac and metabolic health.

• Eating while focusing on something else, like work, results in eating faster and consuming more calories

• About 80% of American’s polled reported spending 7 extra hours a week checking email or returning calls after business hours. That’s 30 hours a month!

• US employees only use 51% of their paid leave/vacation…and 61% of those who do take time off are working at least some of that time.

• And – did you know that piles of papers on your desk are probably full of dust and dust mites? They might aggravate your allergies and even cause asthma! Yuk!!

Girls Who Code Miami Group starting up again

Girls Who Code is back at Miami this fall!  The club will run weekly on Saturdays from 1-3pm in Benton Hall with an optional lunch provided to the girls before the class starting at 12:30.
If you have daughters or know any girls aged 6th grade through 12th grade who might like to participate, please consider having them attend an information session on Saturday, September 3rd at 1:30pm in Benton Hall room 206.  I’ve attached a flyer for the info session.  Please pass it along!

Please let me know if there are any questions; I’ll be happy to answer them.

Cheers,
Erin

Signs of Fall

You know Fall is just around the corner when the good folks at Beloit College post their annual Beloit Mindset list. If you don’t know about the BML…the authors introduce it this way:

We have had the NOW generation…get ready for the RIGHT NOW generation, entering college this fall. This fall’s entering college students, the class of 2020, were born in 1998 and cannot remember a time when they had to wait for anything. They also can’t recall a time when the United States was not at war, or when someone named Bush or Clinton was not running for office.

They have been publishing this since 1998. So check out the list. It’s a lot of fun! https://www.beloit.edu/mindset/  You can see this year’s list and poke around in previous year’s.
