Unfolding Stories 2026: Stories from the RCCAM Collection

As part of the 2026 FotoFocus Biennial: The Long View, this project traces the rich history and content of the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum’s artworks and artifacts from visual artists, art historians, dancers, and architects’ perspectives. From art historical research to experimental animation/video and mixed media installation, this expansive project encompasses a wide array of studies, interpretations, and expressions by +60 artists, scholars, and students from Miami University.

Established in 1978, the RCCAM at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio hosts over 17,500 artworks in its permanent collection. The Unfolding Stories collaborators engaged in an in-depth exploration of the collection from pre-Columbian artifacts to contemporary art including works by Eadweard Muybridge, Berenice Abbott, Steve Schapiro, Felice Beato, H. A. Sigg, William Douglas McGee, Philip Morsberger, Kara Walker, Judith Brown, Sam Gilliam, and Nancy Holt among others.

The result of this multifaceted creative research is showcased through projection mapping events, multimedia exhibition, and artist talks & webinar. Viewers are invited to a mindful and sensuous experience of new works that encapsulate a meaningful dialog between the source of inspiration and the artists own stories and perspectives.

The FotoFocus Biennial, now in its eighth iteration, activates over 70 exhibitions at museums, galleries, universities, and public spaces throughout Greater Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Northern Kentucky in October 2026. Each Biennial is structured around a unifying theme; the 2026 theme, The Long View, considers aspects of time and perspective in photography and film, and how these mediums shape our understanding of the world. FotoFocus welcomes global artists, curators, critics, educators, and visitors to Cincinnati with exhibitions, talks, performances, screenings, and panel discussions during its Biennial Opening Events, October, 1–3, 2026.

Support for the Unfolding Stories 2026 was provided by FotoFocus, the Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum, the Department of Art, and the College of Creative Arts at Miami University.
