This collection of ten ornately bound volumes is a photographic travel journal series that purport to convey a more authentic and direct understanding of 19th century Japan. Captain Francis Brinkley lived and traveled throughout Japan for forty years. When the J.B. Millet Company of Boston commissioned these books, they gathered stories and images of Japan through the eyes of the Japanese who lived there, and then sought out Brinkley to edit and contextualize these texts.
