Part 1 of the Miami Online Short-Term Learning Series comparing Microcredentials, professional education, and certificates.

You have a goal. We have a plan. Wherever you are in your educational journey or career, completing a short-term program to build skills in a specific area could benefit you. Besides traditional degree programs, Miami Online offers Microcredentials, professional education, and certificates to boost your resume and career growth. What are these programs, and how do you choose which one is best for you?

We’ll define each of these categories broadly and explore the details of each type of program in our three-part series.

  • Microcredentials are a collection of 1 to 4 (typically undergraduate) courses designed to certify specific industry skillsets.
  • Microcredentials earn college credit and can be applied toward a degree
  • The individual courses comprising Microcredential programs are transcripted, but the Microcredential program name will not appear on a Miami transcript.
  • You receive a digital badge as “proof” of your learning.
  • Professional Education is one or more non-credit courses that any adult or enrolled student can take to expand their expertise.
  • Professional Education courses will not appear on your college transcript, and you will receive a digital credential and/or a certificate of completion.
  • Certificates are a collection of courses that earn credit and can apply toward a degree
  • Certificates are transcripted.

Microcredentials are short, career-focused programs made up of 1 to 4 courses. Each one is designed to help you build in-demand skills in areas like:

  • Python programming
  • Digital marketing
  • Event planning
  • CNC machining
  • Professional communication

Explore 60+ Microcredentials at Miami University that build skills in business, technology, engineering, Spanish, psychology, and more.

Every Microcredential is for college credit. That means you can apply what you earn toward a larger program or degree later.

Most Microcredentials are offered in a fully online, asynchronous format, so you can learn on your schedule without coming to campus.

You will complete each component course within a standard semester (about 2–4 months), giving you structure without sacrificing flexibility.

  • Earn college credit while you learn.
  • Stand out to employers.
  • Explore new career paths without a long-term commitment.

  • An individual who wants to gain new skills, but is unsure of committing to a degree.
  • A working professional looking to upskill or pivot.

  • A lifelong learner ready to try something new.
